Does anyone have any experience of an older horse under general?

Just found out my friends horse has been badly kicked and cant walk. Vet suspects fracture or infection tendon sheath. Hes on metacam tonight and shes to make a decision tomorrow whether she wants him to go under for further investigation. Hes 26 this year. He is retired but still happy and healthy.

The oldest horse I have put under general was 14yrs. It is very risky for horses of any age and not a decision to be taken lightly. Personally I wouldnt do it at his age. Can xrays/ultrasound etc not be done under sedation??????

I would guess the vets would be the best to assess and advise.

My 12 year old gelding has just had to go under as he had torn his deep digital flexor tendon. Came through it fine, but they did tell me there was a 1 in 100 chance of them not making it.

If you pm me your email, i can forward the info they sent me to read before he had the op about Anestetics etc.

I think my boy had a general to flush out his navicular bursa and tendon in January. But to be honest going to sound silly but all I heard was they were going to have to knock him out (don't really recall the rest of the conversation other than there were big risks and me worrying about him panicking when waking up) He is an older boy 18 this year not that he seems to think so. My mare had an infection of her tendon sheath a while ago she wasn't knocked out for it and recovered well although we did catch this very early. they did try to flush the tendon and bursa with my boy standing but he's in the vets words difficult and bent the needle!!
I'm sure your friend will make the right decision for her horse and hope for a good outcome!

hiya my 28yr full crabbet arab has just under taken 4 hrs of emergency surgery for colic/peritonitus. they told me he'd either make it or not 50/50 chance. he is absolutly fine now and i cant speak highly enough of the team at Liverpool Equine Hospital for their hard work and excellent car they gave him, he is back home with his pals and loving life to the full, although he is supposed to be on paddock rest (small area) and he keep breaking the fence and bouncing around!!! naughty arab!! there are risks but if you dont try everything possible for them i knew i would look back and say wot if! my risk paid off and im luckly to have my boy back healthy and happy xxx gud luk with whatever you decide. x

Vet was up again today and isnt sure if its infected or not. They flushed his leg with antibiotics anyway as a precaution and hes getting it again on thurs. The swelling has went down a bit but hes still in alot of pain...poor mite. Pretty sure it isnt a fracture. So fingers crossed there is not infection and its not in the joints.

My Ishtar was 20 when she had the colic operation - and she was fine. She was in a bad way when we got her to Liphook - and they were not sure about dong the surgery because of her age - but she was in very good condition so they did.
