Hello Aliners, hope you dont mind me posting this here, please move admin if you feel its in the wrong place!

Have any of you been turned down for a horse insurance quote because of your occupation?

I ask this as doing the yearly review (have been with SEIB for 2 years now), thought I'd give NFU a call for my 2 ponies and didnt get very far after name, D.O.B then occupation!
Apparently my occupation (P/T croupier) is a big no-no and they couldnt tell me why. I can understand if I was a terrorist or unemployed so not likely to make payments but I just found it bizarre.
I think its increasingly more common to do as some of you already do and have a seperate bank account if something does go wrong, dont feel I should lie about what I do for a living either

I'm not sure why it would affect your horse insurance, sounds like it's a big brother computer program thing. I was recently turned down for car insurance with one company because I work offshore, doesn't make much sense because it's not like I take my car with me...

Its not just a horse insurance thing tbh, its a RIDICULOUS old fashioned rating factor no-no that harks back to the days when your occupation weighed heavily on your premiums for all insurance

To say NFU are behind the times if they're still using this as a rating factor is an understatement!

The only ones that "normal" insurers still balk at are "entertainment" and "professional sportsman" just in case you get screaming fans messing with your stuff!

Is there another "term" you could use? the word croupier = insurer thinking bad things might happen to you! lol

Im a livery yard manager, but MANAGER is all theyre told if its a rating factor as horses are a risky business!

What does your occupation have to do with HORSE insurance? I cant understand that. I cant understand why they are asking for your occupation in the first place as it has nothing to do with whatever you are doing with your horse.
As you said you are a croupier, i guess that is in a casino, then you are working with money and that is a position of extreme trust. Casinos are more secure than banks.
I had to cancel my insurance as they will not pay out on anything thats not an external injury they can see, like a cut or whatever. D is too old now for me to get insurance. They dont pay out on a naturalish death. Eg, caused by cushings or arthritis, so i might as well use the monthly premiums for any vet bills relating to her condition. Not to mention the amount of excess is just under my average vet bill anyway!
Insurance is such a racket these days. No wonder the amount of uninsured drivers is going up.

I always put "civil servant" under "occupation - I'm sure that if I elaborated and said "jobbing child protection specialist s/worker - usually working closesly with homicidal ego maniacs and persons with serious addictions and mental ill health, who frequently make and attempt to carry out threats to kill me and mine" - the insurance persons would never want to take my money ever again! Do you think this is fraud and therefore invalidating my insurance? I am a civil (sometimes!) servant, just haven't given specifics... insurance companies - look away now!

lol zoocat! fantastic inititive!

Insurance does work on an ask the right question scenario... so if they asked your occupation, and you SAID CIVIL SERVANT... and they didnt ask anything more specific .. then your inthe clear.

Its up to insurer to ask the rating questions correctly, it may just be that occupation isnt a rating factor for your insurer.

Id def stick to the answer you've given though!

TBH VERY very few insureres use occupation as a rating factor these days anyway.
