We have 3 donkeys 1 jenny and 2 gelded jacks, the younger jack has always tried to cover the jenny but now my gelding has started doing the same but also trying to cover the horses as well, i know he was gelded as it was my vet that did it. I have had to bring him home tonight as i cannot have him climbing all over the mares, to my horror he was trying to cover my 2yrs trakehner filly tonight and she was standing for him , has anybody else had this problem in donks or horses, i now cannot turn him out with my horses anymore .

I did have this problem with an ex pony stallion (he was gelded properly and rig test was negative). My vets gave him an injection (can't remember the name now) that cooled his ardour for the season. He needed this done for about 2/3 years then he seemed to just grow out of it.

Thanks Pashon, he never did this before we sold him , he was away about 3yrs then they couldnt keep him and we bought him back last year, he is 10yr this year. I shall have a word with my vet in the morning and see if we can do anything, until then hes just going to have to stay at home which i know will not please him but i cannot have him climbing over the ladies

I do know what you mean lol. If its any help my vet told me its an injection they give Zebra stallions in zoos to calm them from the ladies and so they can keep them in herds without aggression. My pony was around 8 and had been gelded at least 3/4 years. Sounds to me like he has learnt whilst away to 'pleasure himself' and thinks he still can!!
The injection was supposed to last 3 months, but seemed to last all year. But he was only small (around 12hh)

Hi Sab2, sorry I only just saw this as I am sure you know lambing is taking most of my time. But donkeys are one of my specialities so.....

Mounting can be a dominance thing not necessarily sexual behaviour. Even my younger jennies will mount each other sometimes, I've even heard of donkeys mounting people!!

Sorry, there probably is no cure, though you could try the injections. mentioned above. My donks go out in a seperate field, not because of playful behaviour but they need far less good quality grass. Maybe he is getting high on Dr green. Good luck. Sorry I can't be more help but will give this some serious thought.

Quarabian thanks for that, i spoke to the vet yesterday and she has said there is nothing they can do, she suggested turning out with geldings only, but i do not have a gelding , so she is going to see if she can find a new companion home for him, hes only 10yrs so still young for a donkey. I have him at home at the min and he is very unhappy and weight is starting to fall off him although he is still plump, he can see my mares and mini stallion i just think he misses being part of the herd.
