Hi to all, i am in need of some helpfull ideas on how to stop my yearling colt from chewing manes and tails. It started when he was a foal when he chewed his mums tail. He has been turned out with another yearling colt and three geldings. Please help.
Know how you feel ..My yearling colt is a bugger for doing this..He chewed all his mum's mane and tail of wen a foal and started on my other youngsters..I don't turn him out with them anymore he go's out with the older horses and they don't put up with him doing it..It's such a pain...
Bitter apple spray ... we use it for anything that chews from dogs to horses. 1st used it years ago when my old mare used to pull bandages of a knee wound and since then it has stopp'd rug chewers, puppies chewing furniture, oh you name it and its stopp'd it. Great stuff.
Yes Cribox works very well with foals that do this (fairly common!) just smear a little along the mane and tail, doesn't need to be every bit just do intervals on the most reachable bits , bit messy but better than having no mane and tail!!! It washes out ok when foal broken of the habit!

Neat washing up liquid (on hair only, not the dock or skin as it's drying) - tastes foul! Added bonus that when it rains your tails get an impromptu wash!
