Hi Dot
I live just out of Blagdon (left hand side of A38, about 2 miles after airport heading out of Bristol, south). Lower Langford is on the right hand side of the A38, near the Bristol University Teaching Veterinary Hospital. Its pretty flat hacking down there, but I must admit not sure about off road hacking. As far as I know, the best hacking is probably my side of the A38. From here, this side, you are about 2 miles off the Mendips. Plenty of people box up to the Mendips to ride though. There is a pub called The Ship in Rowberrow, about 2 miles from me up the A38 towards Shipham where in summer if you go for lunch you will often see people unloading horses in the pub car park and hacking off from there, then back for a pub lunch! I think the problem you'd face in Lower Langford is that if you want the Mendip hacking, you have to cross the A38 which is an awful road in terms of speed and busyness. As for Banwell, I believe that's towards the A370, heading towards the M5. Going to be very flat down there I think, and if you buy land, you may have to check for flood plain. I have looked at land down that way myself and it looked pretty marshy.
I can't really help more, but if you were lucky enough to get something Rowberrow/Shipham/Blagdon way, you'd do very well for off road I think, although I have to hack along roads to get to off road from where I am. Chew Valley is also lovely for hacking (but a very expensive area to buy in, and again, possibly not that much off road).
Are you looking to buy or rent?
Best of luck,
Mary (Madaba, Mystic Madam and JAS Amira)

Hi Dot,
Ditto with what Mary said, not sure of many (if any) Bridleways in Lower Langford, until you cross the main A38 (very busy A road) and get up onto the Mendips. We're in Kingston Seymour with very flat hacking so often box up there to find a hill!
The main Street in Banwell is abit of a traffic nightmare as its one way in one place, theres quite good hacking up Canada Coombe in Hutton next village along towards the sea.
Shipham is a good village with access straight onto the hills! If you go onto the OS Map website you can view OS maps for any area, close up which is quite useful if your looking a specific area.
Good Luck,
Kate |

I used to ride (roadwork) over A38 from Churchill, up by The Crown straight over A38 and through Rowberrow up onto Blackdown. Or from Crown over Shipham hill, to Winscombe (roadwork)and up onto Wavering Down to Crooks Peak, then over to Loxton and over Bleadon Hill. Need to check routes. There may still be access on the old Railway line at Honeyhall, down through droves to Congresbury. What a shame the 'strawberry line' didnt have bridleway status, though it may in some places; again need to check.
