Does anyone think its warm enough to take rugs off ? normally i would'nt yet but i have with my sec a only because he is a little git to be caught so instead of taking off in the morning and putting back on at night i have had to leave it off if i cant catch him in the mornings he will get too hot i feel like a bad mom tho

I can't wait for the nights to get warmer, but at the mo, for me I think it is getting a bit too cool still at night to go rugless, which is a nightmare seeing as it is too warm imo to stay ruggged during the day for my girl so I am trying to sprint up in the evening to throw the rug back on which isn't pleasing the other half at all. More mutterings of 'that blooming horse' etc. Also, I notice that the forecast says it is about to go a bit colder again.
When will this weather sort itself out?
That said, really can't complain. Had a great hack out this morning round the countryside. I love it, my not long backed 5 year old is happy to hack out on her own, very calmly and walk, when many of the older horses on the yard rarely go out as they get all wired up. For many of the owners, they bought the horses 'made' and in one case having been owned by teenagers who wanted to race everywhere all the time, it is hard to condition the horse to go back to sane and quiet plods.

Mine have both had theirs off during the day for the last few days but the temps in SE due to drop sharply again by the weekend so the bloomin' things will be back on again!
Still got stable rugs on at night although only a thin one as it was 12 degrees at 6pm this evening. Tricky when the temperature can still drop low overnight but at least the nights are nothing like as long as midwinter so it's probably only cold for a short while.

I thought about it today, then it came slightly overcast and remembered its still March and surely this lovely few days can not last  if only it would....but not long now |

yes it is still march and normally would not consider it but its the best of 2 evils i think cant catch so he will roast in the sun mind you im in the south so not quite so cold as further up country  just been out and still very warm but its also supposed to rain at the weekend  |

Ours are off all the time now, whilst the weather is like this, even though they had lightweights on they were sweating in the early mornings so I have taken the plunge...just hope it lasts or there will be a big rush over to rug up again  |

| My three are rugless now. All three have wintered out well, but if the weather really changes I will put back on. Would rather leave them without rugs going forward though as they do love to roll to get their winter coats off. It was so warm here in Bristol today I had a FAN on!!! |

| Rugs off during the day for now, but the temps supposed to drop again at weekend. Lightweight stable rug at bedtime its still a bit chilly. I've noticed the effect of spring grass a little too Simbba! |

I turned everything on the yard out NAKED today!!
LOVE IT!!
They're just having lightweights on at night and rug wash lady is picking all heavyweights up for washing at the weekend !

Ours have had theirs off for a good month now (weather dependent) as in Cornwall we've had a fair few sunny days. However they always go back on at night, maybe it's me being a paranoid mum though so I wouldn't worry

Cinny is out 24/7 and been rugless 24/7 since Saturday. She's warm even at 6.30 in the morning.
However I have become an avid weather forecast watcher to make sure if it gets cold/ wet again I know ahead and the rug can go back on.
She's loving the rugless as she's moulting heaps and she's been doing lots of rolling!

glad im not the only one feeling better now and cinnypony we are both in the south so im glad you said cinnys is of its so warm but... i may try to catch him friday night and put back on as saturday its supposed to rain just hope i can catch him again to take it off after the rain
meant to say he is loving it too was having a good old scratch when i took it off he was a lovely pure white now he is a very dirty muddy yukky colour |

Mine are rugless at the moment. As I work shifts I can't necessarily be around to take Roger's off in the early morning so I've left it off for the last few days. I know it's cool at night but he doesn't mind dry cold, obviously I'll rug again if it rains.
Chips is still in at night but, having an indoor draught proof stable in a barn hasn't been rugged in the stable anyway, and has been turned out without his lightweight turnout for a couple of weeks unless rain is forecast.
I think they're happier without rugs and can get nice and muddy to shift their itchy winter coats.

Great to know I'm not the only one with naked horses day and night!! Warm south east...don't know what I'll do when it rains though! |

Mine are naked during the day and rugs on at night because its still a bit nippy in Cheshire at night.
Good way to loosen their coats aswell let them have a good old roll about in the grass, hopefully with not a drop of mud in sight

| yep all 4 of mine rugless,warm and loving this weather, all lovely and warm even in the morning after 2 frosty nights. mine only had lightweights on anyway changed from winters 2 weeks ago. |

Mine are off in in the day and lightweights on at night.
I'm having my hairy Welsh X Arab mare fully clipped at the weekend and then she will have her sweet-itch rug on 24/7 and then a waterproof at night if rain forecast.
It is forecast to get colder at the weekend though. |

Anyway rugless was allowing her better flirtablity with the gelding in the next field as she's in season big time! |

My part bred mares have been rugless all winter, day and night and are looking well....... round. The little part bred seems to drop her coat very quickly if not rugged. They are in at night and dont go out in the heaviest of rain though. The weather here in Portsmouth area is fantastic, T shirt weather.
