Not very exciting photos you might be thinking and you'd be right except that this is my rug phobic mare after I turned her out this morning! No fear at all, calm and happy wearing her rug, something that I never thought I'd see! I'm so happy I just had to share

Neem has had a turnout rug phobia for years now and I gave up for ages after spending a fortune on different rugs and her being terrified in all of them. It was strange because she has always happily worn rugs indoors but for turnout it was out of the question. She would run through fences, anything, blind with panic.

I'm so proud of my little girl. I never intended to try again because she has been happy rugless for years but when this winter saw temps of minus 15 I wanted her to have the option. She will be 16 next month and now I know she can be cosy and rugged in her older years. I still can't believe she is 'cured'.

Anyway I just wanted to share my happiness with people who might understand - my husband just doesn't get it lol

Well done--that is great to see. So reassuring to know you will have the option of rugging her now.

Must be a real comfort maybe the older you get the more you need the home comforts good for you to keep persevering it must have been nerve racking though must say it looks like a real pukka rug though what make, had the similar thing happen to a 2 year old some years back a well known seller decided to make their own rugs which Happened to buy after first big roll the straps ripped and she blindly ran through post and rails its horrific but congrats great job

Helena fantastic news!!

I think we've posted on each other's threads before as we both have mares with the same turnout rug phobia which other people find so hard to understand.

Funnily enough this winter my crazy old bird K has deigned to accept rugs again too! For the first time ever this year and last she has access to her stable directly from the field and it would appear that as long as she knows she can get inside whenever she wants to she will wear the rugs. It is bizarre and yes distressing to see them so upset and running through fences etc to get away from the situation.

Well done I'm so pleased for you! I might take some piccies of K tom to share our good rug news !

Thanks guys

You should definitely put pics up of K happy in her rug Jen!
It's such a weight off your mind when they will happily wear a rug.

If anyone has a similar problem and is interested to know how Neem was 'cured' please pm me

You must be happy (such a worry when they're out rugless and there are no options!)

Taz isn't frightened of his rug once it is on; he does the "Wall of death" round the stable while I am trying to put it on. He wasn't rugged before I bought him when he was rising 3 but for the first two years I had him he happily wore his rug. This year he takes it off! He has a mobile stable in his field and he is stabled at night but as he has a very fine coat I do worry about him in the freezing weather.

He had a Rhino which he grew out of so I swapped it for a Rambo Duo and then an Optima both of which he removed so I might try a Rhino again next winter. I like the linings which can be changed for different weights but obviously Taz doesn't!

Sp pleased Neem is happy in her rug, what make is it?

Barbara
