Hi folks,
I need to buy a sweet itch rug. The Boett rug is so expensive though...!
Can anyone recommend a really good cheaper alternative?
Thanks,
Kirsty

The Riff Raff are a good shape, later stock coming up smaller then the first batch. But they do degrade/rip after about 18months. We bought a Pessoa on for the destructive cob and it's been grand. The Premier one look similar, might go there next. |

The boetts are expensive but I honestly dont think anything compares to them. I think they are a godsend. My mum had a highland pony who had no mane when we got her at 3yo. We decided to get her a Boett and when we sold her at 12yo you would never have believed she had sweet itch. She had a full thick very long mane. We used to have people come up to us at shows whod heard she had sweet itch and ask what we did. In 9 years we only went through 2 boetts, partly cos she changed shape as she got older. She used dive her head through the neck bit when we went to put it on. You could almost see the sigh of relief once it was on, lol So they are pricey but they are worth every penny. Best thing we ever bought for her. |

I have a lookalike of the Boett which cost me almost half the price and is absolutely superb. Charlie is completely happy in it and no sign of the dreaded itch. I got it from someone in Derbyshire through an e-bay site. Thoroughly recommend it. |

I'm currently looking for a decent fly rug also that doesn't rub out the mane and protects from midges and will keep him cool!!!
I have been highly recommended the Rambo Sweet Itch Hoody which my friend has and she says its brilliant I certainly was impressed by it when we put it on her boy yesterday, it has lots of straps for a really close fit and it thick so midges can't get through but also reflects the sun so they don't get at all hot!!!
Although theses are about £100 which is a bit more than I wanted to spend although my mum did say ''you can't put a price on him having a comfortable summer and a full mane'' haha!!! which is very true!!! Also I was looking at the premier equine sweet itch rug which is a similar design to the Rambo one and it's half the price and I wondered if any one had any experiences with them?! xxx |

I agree with Miss Vlacq the older Riff Raffs were slightly more roomy , i still have an original one which is 5 years old now & 2 of the newer ones that are 4 yrs old , the lining inside the neck tends to rip but i guess because my 2 don`t have any trees or bushes to snag them on they`ve lasted well! I used to have them in Sweet itch hoodys, they are ok on cooler days but i had to take them off on a hot day or they would sweat like mad also you have to buy a size bigger than you`d normally have or they are way too tight! |

I bought a Boett but I'm afraid I didn't like it. I loved the theory behind it but it was a bit too thick like a slicker and in hot weather the horses really sweat in it; I found in rain they were soaking too.
I ended up really loving the Shires Maxiflow and the Mark Todd anti-midge rugs. Both go up to the ears and have a nice drop, which is good since midges can only fly in straight lines... Both are made of a really durable mesh which lets the breeze/air flow nicely in hot weather; they dry quickly too. They do them in white which is good for very sunny weather reflecting the sunshine, and they have detachable necks. You can put their turnout rugs over them when it's a bit cooler or wet.
They both have a silk mane protector on the crest which was especially useful for the Andalusian with his need for mane protection. And they last a long time!! |

I agree with Vik1, the boetts are the best imo. The other cheaper imitations don't fit as well and end up slipping back and rubbing on the shoulders or across the withers. I suppose the shape of your horse needs to be taken into account though.
I have a boett and a snuggy hoods sweet itch rug and i switch between them when the other one is being washed. Also the snuggy hood (hood part) you can use under a normal turn out rug. |
