Latest from ESMA dated.6th March 2011.
ESMA 'Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals' The Egypt Workforce Animals Crisis - Status Report (06/03/2011) is now published. Egypt Workforce Animals Crisis - Status Report (06/03/2011) At our last 'Horse Feeding' session on the 6th March 2011, we are pleased to annouce that ESMA fed a total of 367 horses, with enough food to sustain them for one week. We are currently refining the feeding process to ensure that all the malnourished horses will be ...given enough food to sustain them according to their current body weight and condition. We noticed last time that an improvement in their body weight has started to show, and we are seeing fewer and fewer really skinny horses now. Unfortunately we have been informed that The Brooke Hospital has decided to stop their feeding program in which they were giving them an additional 1k of corn per day, in addition to our 1.5kilos of mixed feed per day, which means that after our refining assessment is finished we will need to provide all the feed for the horses, as no other Organisation (as far as we know )will be doing so now. We have been informed that the 'Four Paws' Association will be feeding them tomorrow, before their team goes back to Austria. We are most grateful for this feeding and the one they did last week too. They also gave us a donation to cover one 'feeding session' on their behalf. We also heard that they have been in Upper Egypt doing feedings for the horses there. We are glad to hear that there are tourists in Upper Egypt, unfortunately we cannot report the same situation here in Cairo. Please continue to support us in our endeavers to feed the horses, at least until another bigger organisation steps in to assist, or replace what we are doing. Without your donations The ESMA Horse Feeding Program would not be possible. Thanks on behalf of those malnourished and hungry horses. Yours sincerely Susie Nassar ESMA Founding Member www.esmaegypt.org by:Alaa Sharshar

Susie Nassar Thanks everyone for your continuing support....these are tough times in Egypt, and all your support really keeps us going!!!! about an hour ago ---------------------------------- ESMA 'Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals' ESMA Volunteer Meeting Dear ESMA Volunteers and potential new ones, Firstly, we would like to apologise to all of you for being "missing in action" for the past while; we have been under a lot of stress, and have had been very busy with the Horses and Camels crisis. Due to t...he suddenness of this crisis as well as the revolution, we have not had any time to plan our operations for this coming period, and now it is essential for us to regroup and return to operations and planning, as we badly need the assistance of our volunteers to be able to continue our crisis operations and to go forward in general. We will be holding a volunteer meeting at 1 30 PM this Friday at our Maadi office. Please make an effort to attend this meeting as we shall be discussing several important issues, and would also like to hear all your contributions. Please RSVP with me ASAP, and let me know if you need help arranging transportation. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday. Everyone interested in becoming a new volunteer is most welcome to join. For further information call me on 0105799777. Alaa Sharshar Deputy Volunteer Coordinator - ESMA on behalf of Susie Nassar - Volunteer Coordinator ESMA www.esmaegypt.org See more by: Alaa Sharshar ------------------------- I for one will be collecting for the ESMA Team, putting the money in the mouths of those starving horses. I am not going to do anything until I have proof that this IS the case , they say they ( the Brooke ) are still feeding so until I find out for sure I am not going to stop paying into what must surely be a worthy charity. ( as well as ESMA and PAF) if someone can give me positive proof that they have stopped then I assure you I will! |

I'm sure that there is more to this than meets the eye. I for one won't be withdrawing my support from The Brooke unless there is irrefutable proof or an unsatisfactory response to the claims.
Maybe they are feeding in a different area? I was going to say I would also ring them tomorrow but it's a pointless waste of their resources for the office to be answering multiple calls from concerned aliners.
Maybe one of us could post their response on here if they got through today or yesterday?

ESMA 's Summary of Horse Feeding for February. 1.13th February (first ‘Horse Feeding’ day) This is the only figure we are not 100% sure of as the stable owner recorded this figure to identify those horse owners who were worthy of the horse feed – number of horses fed 400-450 horses enough to last 2 days. 2.15th February – (the day our food was looted) – 203 horses for one day 3.16th February – 317 horses for 2 days 4.18th February – 356 horses for 2 days 5.20th February – 180 horses for 3 days 6.23rd February – 404 horses for 4 days 7.27/28th February – 462 horses for 7 days (we calculated here that Brooke was giving 1k a day = 7k which represents for us 3 days of minimum amount feeding, we gave them 10k per horse to supplement Brooke’s 7 kilos….) -------------------------------- Continued help with feeding and treatment will continue ( I understand) until all the funds run out. So please if you can and want to help the starving Horses, Donkeys and now Camels, please donated, every £1 helps. The ESMA team of volunteers are working daily to help these animal and all the cats & dogs abandoned, which runs into hundreds. Another Call for Help: Cats & Dogs too. http://www.animalsasia.org/index.php?UID=F9E8GZ8QHMQ http://www.esmaegypt.org/ HSBC has an account already set up for UK Donations to ESMA. Sort Code: 403412. Account: 81868349. This account will also take DD. or cash can be paid straight in. Thank You. Sue

Lynda, i have no intention of phoning the Brooke in the UK when so many if concerned A-Liners are doing that already. (I only have my mobile here and connections are difficult at best and i do not want to be put on HOLD for a long time. sorry.) Since i am in Jordan i cannot claim to KNOW anything about the situation in Egypt, i can only rely on the reports from people i trust, like all of us do. What i DO know is that there is no Brooke-funded vet on site in Petra, and there has not been for several months. The only Brooke employee is an "Office Manager" who is NOT hands on at all when it comes to helping animals in need. The Brooke clinic when i visited two weeks ago had rows of empty medical supply boxes on display to "impress the visitors", as i was told by a vet-nurse who works for the ministry. These boxes were dated 2003, 2005 and had no more recent dates. It is not the fact that the Brooke have handed over responsibility that annoys me but the fact that they LIE about it, (on the phone if not on their web-site) mis-representing themselves to people like you, and benefitting from people's generosity. I too hope that there is a good and charitable reason for the Brooke no longer feeding at the site in Egypt. Maybe they have simply run out of money!! |

Here is the reply from my email last night
Please be assured that the Brooke is continuing to hand out feed - we are handing out one week packs which may have led to some confusion amongst some people who assumed that this mean we were no longer in the field. If you have access to Facebook, my colleagues are providing regular updates on our work in Egypt on our Facebook page and also on our website.
We will continue to provide feed for animals and we are still working to treat animals in Egypt
Thank you for your support and also for your clear compassion for working equines suffering in Egypt
Kind Regards Anna Clarke |

Do you know I find it quite sickening watching all this bickering taking place on here. It's utterly pathetic that the charities are in-fighting with each other and trying to score points, too many big egos clashing - for god's sake give it a rest - it's not a competition as to who is the best charity and/or who is feeding the most in the most public places - as though the situation weren't depressing enough in the first place - unbelievable and utterly unproductive .

It seems what a lot of people in the UK want is an easy way to send money and to make sure it goes to help the starving horses direct. I know of a few who would send funds but having to get to their bank which like me is several miles away is not easy. You also get fagged at having to actually find time to do this. I thought anyone could set up to be a recipient of a PayPal account?
I have sent funds via PayPal to a friend as a gift?? I don't understand the problems people are having here. |

I agree Jen , but I am hoping the Brooke will come on here to defend themselves, because putting down a charity is very damaging , unless there is sound evidence to do so . There is enough room for ALL the charities to help these horses , in fact the more there are the more chances the horses will have to get food and much needed treatment . |

totally agree with lynda there is enough room for all charities the more helping the better for the horses and as far as im aware it was some kind of mistake like i said before but we have to wait for brooke to make a statement to say they are still feeding etc i know brooke were slow on the ground to start with but they are feeding now which is the main thing i'm not sure who is bickering ? have i missed something ? i think we can all make our minds up and some donate to them all im not in that possition to donate to them all i wish i was i have done to esma only coz i saw them on the ground feeding etc but this may change once beth gets back from playing camels lol and puts up her statement |

No one is bickering.
We think the volunteers on the spot in Egypt are doing a Great job. Just look at the numbers that were fed from Day 1. I wish we were nearer, I'd be there myself helping.
Maybe Red Rum will update us on Brooke's position in Egypt regarding the feeding. and I think there is a bit of a report due out today in the H & H, which features the Brooke's work there. Wonder if that is the position or not. The Local Brooke Group in Shropshire have collected and sent £1000.
Thanks Sue

I have been out with a good friend today for lunch/meeting where we have come up with an idea to raise money, she has a huge pool house at her place ( bigger than our house !) and we are going to arrange to have a summer BBQ and auction night there, tickets sold on the door to include food and drink , then to auction things . she has a friend who has offered a weekend break for two, and lots of offers are coming for the auction prizes. ( free driving lesson is another offer )
we hope to be able to raise lots of money which will all go to the three charities mentioned here , the Brooke , the PAF and ESMA if that goes well we will do a murder mystery evening too ! again all proceeds going to these charities.
she was really pleased that I had alerted her to this suffering as although she has horses, she had no idea about what is happening in other countries. |

Well Done Lynda, Sounds Great. I've baked cakes today and will try and take a donation for a slice of cake when I go to he ride at the weekend.
Facebook reports that ESMA was in Nazlet El Seman this morning and that it was Brooke's feed day there, No sign of them... so thats a bit sad.. Hope someone will update us. Sue |
