Baz and i are attending the North Wales ridden clinic very excited and enjoying having something to aim for. Is anyone else in our shoes, what is your plan, any tips?
Mrs Vlacq gave me a brill one- make sure your horse is used to working around others who may be cantering past you or using your horse as a wall to stop LOL be a shame to get to a show and it all be too much.
We are working in school walk trot and canter around the school on the track changing of rein in all paces, starting canter this weekend!

We're in similar situation to you. chelle hopes to bring Bertie out ridden showing this year. We're hacking out regularly, and just aim for him to see/experience as many things as possible - he went hunting the other day, hoping to do pleasure ride next month, & he is starting to have lessons.
The pony club is organising dressage training soon, so we hope to take Bertie rather than Rosie so he'll get used to working around other horses. If all goes well then chelle will do some walk, trot dressage tests in the early summer. We don't plan to do the ridden shows until August. Good luck. |

Just for the future....
I think it is the North Wales group that hold a show in spring. They have a class for 'Pre-Novice' where the very, very new, can take their first chance in the ring. IMO this was an excellent idea and there were only three or four in the class, and they were all very 'green' you could see how they became used to the ring and proceedings as the class went on.
...might be helpful when you think you are ready. |

Yes brenda , we have had a prenovice class (no judge ride) for several yrs now - they seem to be catching on too which is great for the really green horses, especially with the revised novice definition. Some years it's empty but we keep it in to encourange people to drag themselves out of winter ! See you both at Northop in a few wks Angel and Alypie! |

Hi Anglearab, i'm sure you and Baz will be just fine. It always amazes me how well behaved our 'mad arabs' are when we take them out.
Ozzy will be six this year (March) and i have agreed that a young teenager (Becky) who helps me with the horses can take him to Pony Club this year.
On Monday they both did their first ever dressage test together at a pony club dressage show. There were loads of big horses in the warm up arena and they were cantering past him at all angles. At one point he had one coming towards him and one coming up behind on the inside track and they made an ozzy sandwich.. He just took a deep breath and carried on as if they weren't there. (Much to the amazement of the mums watching who were all waiting for the 'mad arab' to turn himself inside out)
In the dressage test they did really well and came out with some lovely comments as well as some points they both need to work on. Their score was 57.5% which i thought was very good for a novice rider and a novice horse at their first dressage show.
Here is a blurry picture i took on my phone.
I'm sure you and BAz will be just fine. I'd just take him to as many little things as you can before the big event so he gets used to all the goings on..
Keep us posted. x |

I am so envious of all these clinics for baby horses.Such a good idea and an opportunity for socializing after the long winter. Hope the groups further south are taking note! Have a great time! |
