I was hoping to post good news this morning when my donkey Nipper went into labour last night. When she seemed to be trying too hard for no result I had a feel to see if the foal was presesnted okay. No, just an ear!! on further careful examination it became obvious that this was a poll presentation. I am an experienced lamber and can cope with all sorts of problems in a ewe, but this sent me straight to the phone.
Our vet was brilliant. She was here in just 15 mins. In rural Wales that is pretty good going. She succeeded where I had failed in finding the front feet and between the four of us, hubby, trainee vet and Dianne the super vet we got the foal out in minutes. Unfortunately he had died earlier due to the placenta seperating from the mare so there was no reviving him. I suppose that is why the presentation went wrong, A live foal must help a bit! He looked just perfect.
Nipper is doing fine. A bit bruised and puzzled. I think as this was her first foal she wont be as traumatised as if she knew to expect a little foal. Vet said we had done everything right, but this was just unlucky.

That's so sad. As you say, hopefully Nipper won't be too traumatised as she didn't know what to expect. Luckily you were there to call for help so she wasn't struggling on her own.

Thanks for everyones kind words. Nipper has been out with her mates and her own mum in the field today. She seems to be okay and getting on with her life. We let her see the baby, but took it away fairly quickly. That seemed to be the kindest thing.
Hopefully my next post on here will be more cheerful especially as I can now put photos on AL. |
