I have, finally, got around to sorting through two enormous bags of (mainly unlabelled) VHS tapes left by my old YO when she died, in 2007. The delay has mainly been due to trying to work out how to connect an old VCR to a new TV; however, now I've managed to do that. Most of the tapes contained old episodes of Eastenders and A Touch of Frost and wildlife programmes (now in the dustbin) but I have unearthed some beauties!
Therefore I spent this afternoon watching the 2002 Crabbet Convention from Merrist Wood. There's another tape of a Crabbet Convention (1985, I think?) and also Crabbet Archives! There's a tape of the 4-5 year old mare class at UKIAHS in 1990 which was won by Roger's dam, Khiri and of the in-hand stallions at the National show in 1985 (when it was held at Ascot) which was won by Roger's grandsire, Mikhan of Pulpits, the year he went reserve BNC to Ralvon Elijah.
There are some amateur-produced tapes too; for example the lunchtime entertainment at HOCON in 1998, which features myself driving Roger and Hilary driving her mare Dancer's Miracle (Bright Cavalier x Blue Sundancer) with commentary written by our friend Jackie Howe who was, unfortunately, too ill to do the announcing. Other tapes contain other snippets of horses so I'll have to scrutinise them too.
With diagrams drawn by my local elecrical retailer(!) I've managed to correctly wire my equipment to record from VHS to DVD . I'll certainly record the HOCON tape to DVD and (as I'm on a roll with technology now!) I'll try to upload to youtube anything interesting (non-copyright, obviously) if anyone wants to have a look!

Lisa Rachel, I haven't watched the Crabbet Archive yet (other than to ensure they are "horse" tapes, not EastEnders lol)....but the opening credit suggests it is 1952-53!

I've got the Crabbet Archive tape and the later one, Return to Crabbet. They are wonderful records of open day parades held by Lady Wentworth and it's fantastic to see such famous horses as Indian Magic (with Fred Rice), Grey Royal, Serafix, Oran and loads more. A lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon! |

Hi I would love to know if you have been able to post the archive of Khiri being shown on You Tube yet! I had Khiri on loan until last summer and would love to see footage of her in her prime.

Kirst, Ooh, great - I haven't seen much of Aboud...I'm ashamed to say I don't know much about Chips' relatives whereas I know many of Roger's family.
Ysta, Hello, are you Debbie? I was so sorry to hear from Fiona that Khiri was pts last September; she was a fit old girl who loved her pleasure rides and her work doing range clearance for the MOD! I haven't managed to work out how to get stuff from DVD onto YouTube yet; however I have burned a copy for Fiona which is all ready to be posted tomorrow (I sent Fiona an email yesterday, telling her to expect a surprise package)!

Caryn we have a device (bought at Maplin's) which allows you to transfer these old videos to your laptop or computer. Then you can burn them to DVD.
There's a danger that 'airing' these may cause problems if they've oxydised at all. And they sound far too fascinating and valuable an archive to be lost!
Wish you were near me or I'd lend you the machine!! |

Roseanne, Thanks for the suggestion, however I can record from VHS and burn to DVD.....the problem is not having the software to play/save the DVD onto my p.c. which I haven't resolved as yet!

Hi Yes I am Debbie! Sorry I did not reply sooner - disaster struck and I lost my dear old Mare after 28 years - I expect she is frolicking in horsey heaven with Khiri now! I wil go over to Fiona's soon and watch the footage you have sent to her. I will try to put some photos of Khiri on my profile when I can work out how to do it!

Ysta - now I understand what the obscure email from Fiona was about! I haven't managed to play the DVDs on my p.c. yet, then I'm sure the link will come in handy.
So sorry to hear you lost your old mare recently.
