Just a quick update for anyone who might be interested. Max was gelded one week ago yesterday. Because of his age it was decided that he should be knocked down for a closed castration. The operation went well and whilst down he had his teeth skin and ears done as well. When he got back he was good for a couple of days and then the swelling grew and he got depressed. To cut a long story short we have had a couple of burst stitches but today he was turned out for a short while in the round pen on his own. He has MAJOR anxiety issues which he seems to resolve by " Marking Time" not weaving but proper piaffe which makes me think that at some time he may have been tethered. When led in hand if he is scared he just Drags towards what he is scared of. He appears to have no thaught for his own safety, he runs through fences, tries to barge through the telegraph pole tie ups and on the whole is going to be a long haul, but on a good note he does respond to GOOD BOY! prob never heard it before but learns quickly and loves his haylage... further news later if anybody is interested. will try for pics soon but its all hands on deck here ATM. Well Done shfwarrior....this boy has certainly found his shan-gri-la. Over time he will learn to trust again and settle and become your friend. These horses respond to individual care and attention, you are quite right sounds like he's had an unhappy history somewhere in his past, but thats an end to it, he's now found you and his future looks secure.
I look forward to hearing about his progress.

Bless you for taking him on and giving him the attention he deserves. Please do be careful, I do have a worry concerning the Piaffe bit. PM me if you want me to explain.

Would there be any way you could introduce him to a little friend .. once his testosterone has receded? this might give him confidence out of the stable if he had a quiet old pony to turn out with??? |

Poor little man. He must feel really agrophobic if he has been couped up in a stable for all that time. Its bound to take a while for him to get used to being out.
Looking forward to seeing pictures and I hope that he does get a turnout friend to help him with all his anxieties.
Bless you for taking him on. I am sure he will repay you a million times over.

Well done - so nice to hear!! Can sympathise about severe anxieties, it's taken me 1,5 years to settle Mush so that he can now be in the field on his own (horses next door) without panicking while his mate is out for a ride. Time and patience will do it and at least Max is young so has the whole of his life now in front of him
Let us know how it goes. |

I,m so pleased that you have max,i am very lucky that the mare has obviously at some point been a much loved horse as she is so gentle and just wants to please even if she,s unsure. There are still horses left behind at the place they came from and although the rspca are involved things are still not good, they should be removed.Anyway good luck with max and please keep in touch. |
