I have a magnificent collection of 6 foot rugs & a 5 foot nine horse. Is it feasible to alter the rugs & do you think I could do it myself? I don't think I can make the horse any bigger (except round the middle!). The rugs are not worth much to sell, combined they probably wouldn't amount to 1 new one, but they have plenty of wear left in them. Suggestions most welcome. Any ideas Doug?

It depends how they are cut - you can dart the shoulders to bring them down a size, or move the chest fasteners to give more of an overlap. I've also taken a good slice off the back of a couple of rugs that were long but shallow, just folded it under and stitched.

Years ago we always had to put darts in the shoulders of our canvas rugs as they were mahoosive around the neck, so much so that they ended up rubbing really badly as they dropped down so low, it does have the effect of pulling them forward a bit too.

Thanks, hadn't thought of darting the shoulders.

if they are not over big on him can you use them on top of another rug My top sheets are a size bigger to allow for the extra bulk, and mine can wear there next size up as kiara has a 5ft stable with a 6ft light weight turnout on top Though the stable rug is generous in size and more like a 5ft9, ollie is a 6ft3 but his turnout rug is 6ft6 and xsara 6ft rug also fits him though neat, and xsara again wears usually 6ft but also 6ft3 and 5ft9 and all fit well.

I had all of my fal stable rugs altered - cut a chunk out of the wither section and fur buffer added as they sat too high on them at a cost of £10 per rug. Cheaper than replacing them but I still don't like them grrrr !

I do a nifty trick with some wide velcro from a curtain shop, sewn where the rug fastens at the front, as well as shorten the length of front straps. Worked a treat on boz's lightweight, even on ordinary home sewing machine. did break a few needles tho
