Hi I'm considering putting one of my horses out on loan, I am aware that I will need a proper loan agreement and BHS do a contract, I was unsure how much people tended to loan a horse out for? I am very close to where they would be kept and know the people very well, I can visit whenever needed but am a bit stumped as to what price as they have asked me to come up with a price? Any help gratefully recieved.

Regards, Sapphire

Loans are normally free with the loaner paying for all costs associated with keeping the horse (unless part-loan or share with owner, then they normally pay a set amount towards the keep).

A lease is where an amount is paid per month, normally used for breeding horses or successful
Competition horses I think

Have no idea how much to lease a horse for - guess you start with how much they are worth and work out a monthly sum from that? For part-loan it normally depends if the horse is DIY or full livery and how many days the loaner uses the horse - one of my friends pays £10 per day (she does 2 days a week) and the horse is DIY

My sister has her gelding on loan (through AL), and has done for the last 18 months. We used the BHS loan agreement. We insure him, and are responsible for all vaccinations, vets fees, cost of keep etc. but we do not pay her for having him, as Pasha says, that would be a lease agreement, sorry do not have any experience of those.

We have loaned in and out over the years, never involved any financial reward, but following one bad experience when our mare was returned in very poor condition, with the loss of a number of articles (rugs, magnetic boots etc.), I would say that it is a very good idea to keep in close touch with your loanee and your horse, however 'nice' the prospective loanees appear.
