I will be having a go at ridden showing this year for the first time in many years, I have a youngster who will obviously be shown at Novice level however I also have an older boy who has done a fair bit of ridden in the past, He's HOYS qualified and has won a few Championships so I assume Novice is out of the question for him.
This may sound daft but what is the difference in the 2 classes in the format and requirements for individual shows etc. Also doe the judge always ride at Novice level??
Hi there the format is basically the same but in the open classes you will be expected to do a gallop on the left rein. The judge will ride the horses in both classes and individual shows are sometimes required in championships. Your older boy is not eligible to enter novice classes as he has qualified for hoys. The best advice I can give is go to a early show and watch the classes and ask lots of questions. Kathryn Oldroyd
Many thanks for this Kathryn, one last question...I have noticed that as in hack classes some riders take the reins in one hand, when is this appropriate ie novice, open or both and does it matter which hand??
Personally don't like to see riding with one hand.... but if its done properly and for a short period of time it can look good. As for which hand the inside hand is the one and can be done in novice and open classes............
