Well i have never really gone into what happened with my boy and the fact that he turned out to not be by "his sire".

But as we start another breeding season PLEASE do not take it for granted that the foal you have on the ground is by the correct sire!

My neighbour payed a lot of money for a warm blood mare. she covered it with a very expensive stallion and the resulting foal was elite.

Imagine her upset to find out when the foal was registered that her mare wasn't by the stallion it was supposed to be.This is a 2010 foal.

She now has to try and find the sire of her mare or her colt foal is worthless.

When we discovered our foal wasn't by his sire i started to speak to so many people who had found the same thing out.

I was lucky. we found our foals sire. The people involved payed compensation and the foal has found the most wonderful home and is now rising four.Hopefully he will have a superb career undersaddle. But he does have a very "dodgy" passport and a brand that he is entitled to

So when your little bundle of joy hits the deck, if indoubt DNA test it!

Nicky

IMO the people responsible for doing such a thing such not be allowed to register any more animals for a period of time. They must realise that if caught out their whole reputation as breeders is destroyed when they are named and shamed. DNA does not lie so why do they even bother to try and fool people.

Sorry....I've got off the soapbox now

It may not have been deliberate. I know of a couple of incidents where the mare has been mated and all seemed well. However, the mare had already mated with a colt unbeknown to the owner and was a couple of days in foal when mated to the stallion!

Not all incidents are deliberate deception. The two I mentioned were not bred to sell but for the owner to keep. He did in fact sell them and mated the mare to the correct stallion the following year.

It seems it happens in big or small studs. I heard of one born raised and sold that turned out to be by the other stud stallion at the yard............. Needless to say the new owners were furious as they had the wrong bloodlines!!!
Makes mental note to self not to get Hakka and Rusleem muddled up lol!!!
