It's a sidesaddle class. Any costume can be worn, the class is judged purely on outfit and turn out - elegance. Most outfits are victorian
Also done in driving, again as a costume class.

I have seen it performed astride but usually with children and at 'smaller' shows, but still done in costume, although if memory serves me correct I have seen a photo of Andrea Boyle's Bay horse doing C'd'e with a lady astride somewhere, so you may well get away with it astride!, but I think you will be outnumbered by sideways people!.

you'll find loads of pic's online. Usually it's a Victorian costume, very large skirt that goes right across horses back to the tail, fitted jacket, and top hat. If you google it, you will find some.
PM me if you like and I will find some for you.

Here's a link, don't think it's advertising as it's Pleasure print's who do the photo's at our National show!! (along with Sweets).

(Please PM for the link)

These are all side saddle but it will give you an idea of the costumes worn.

Now i want to do this even more! Where would I get a costume and what would a pure bred suit, other than an arab costume but I dont think that i would present the correct idea of 'elegance' in one of those?

Just googled it and can't find anything Have big plans now for riding Shesky side-saddle and dressed-up like a Victorian! Think we'd look great!

Where can we enter these classes? Do they mark you down for bucking and spooking at your rider's attire? (I am joking, although wouldn't be if riding Pasha lol!)

The website of pre loved has wanted adverts for C'D'E outfits, as do most of the BSPS group websites. Some of the specialist showing websites will also be good places to advertise for costumes, H&H and TSR would probably be your best bet as your more likely to have people who have done it on there.

ok, these outfits are expensive! especially if you have no idea if you will take to it!

He happily wears his winter riding blanket but does exactly billow about as a dress might do, or is the key to find a dress where the part that goes over the horses is pretty flat fitting so more like the riding blankets they are used to?!

As an extra class to do, i seemed to have picked a very niche and costly one!!

Hi Nut when Andrea's gelding Tim won the class at equifest last year there were about 40 in it! If you look in last years AHS Winter news there is a picture - bottom half right hand page about two thirds of the way through magazine (sorry cant remember page number and i am at work so cant check!).The out fit was an old fashioned wedding bodice and skirt that had been bought from a second hand shop - that is another place where you may find some suitable outfits that are cheaper. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Sally, now thats a good suggestion and I still have my wedding dress from 10 year agos which is actually vintage in style and the skirt part could be adapted! It was strapless but im sure someone could put lace sleeves on it for me!

Hmmm...time to get my mum to work on the sowing machine!

We used to have a Concours class at Ingliston Equestrians shows. They cancelled it this year!
Ive never seen it sideways up here! I think Nadem would probably have a fit at the dress never mind his mother going sideways [( Im dying for a go though

I have a friend who does CDE on her Friesan, both astride and side saddle, and as pairs with another lady and her Friesan.
She won her class at the Royal London Show this year, and if I remember right was her section Champion too.
Here is a link to the highlights of the show, it shows a lot of the CDE you can get an idea of the type of costumes. My friend is dressed in the deep red and black with a top hat on her Friesan in the video.

She's also a bit later on doing the pairs, dressed in top hat and tails.

I love to watch them, so elegant. I did think of having a go at it myself next year too :)

makes me want to do it even more! Having seen the girl in a strapless dress near the end, i feel they are not the way to go! Having to ride one handed to keep your cleavage in, doesnt really shout elegance!!

hi Nadia, the class she entered was the traditional one so not jazzy etc as someof the pictures that i have seen, have you picked up this weeks horse and hound? (the edition that came out on thursday 6th jan) there is a lovely piece about sidesaddle riding in there, they ladies look very smart and traditional - maybe have a peek ad draw some inspiration from that article? x
