Hi, this morning found several half chewed 'mice' of haylage (sorry cant remember the technical term ) around the communal haylage bale. Presumed it was my 25 year old and was all set to call the dentist when I caught my 3 year old quidding and pulling all sorts of unhappy faces while eating.

Am I right in thinking that this is probably just him losing/changing a molar? I am hoping to be able to just monitor him and make sure he doesn't lose weight rather than get the dentist out just at the mo. The old boy is due his yearly scale and polish too but as I'm currently 2 days overdue a baby Im not keen to make appointments I may not be in a position to keep!!! Was hoping the old boy would last til early in the New Year when Ill be back in shape ...

Never noticed the youngster have any problems like this before and Ive had him since 6 months which is the only reason Im now a little unsure if it could be anything more serious....

Any advice much appreciated, Alison

I can't remember at what age they start losing their molar caps; but he's certainly the right age to be a teething problem. I think they lose the central incisors at 2 1/2 years and then at 3 1/2 for the next pair out, so have a quick look to see if there's a loose incisor (and pull it out if necessary - I did with one of Roger's ) and if there's nothing loose it will be a molar tooth and he may sort it out in 24 hours.

If it doesn't settle in a couple of days I'd get someone out, as it could be half out and have got jammed against another tooth and be causing pain and potential problems with adjacent teeth/tongue. Also, in this cold weather you really want him to be eating enough forage to keep warm.

Thanks for the advice Caryn, his incisors are fine, he has a lovely gap there but its not been causing him any probs the last couple of weeks. Definitely a problem further back in his mouth.

Should have mentioned he had been eating happily enough for about an hour when this started so he's not starving, that is a good plan re giving it a couple of days to clear up then getting someone out. Been weight taping him regularly anyway as he is bottom of the pecking order and was worried he might not be getting his fair share so Ill know straight away if he starts losing weight.

At least worrying about the horses is keeping my mind off worrying about anything else!

Could well be shedding caps so unless it's interfering with eating or causing a smell it should resolve itself soon enough. His routine dental will tell you more. You could flush his cheeks out with a syring of warm very dilute hibiscrub in case he's made himself a knot of haylage that he can't shift.
You may well find a cap amid the haylage soon - I collect dropped teeth!

I've got three of Roger's incisors, a molar cap and two wolf teeth.....out of that lot I promise I only pulled one out

Is this your first baby, Ali? I hope all goes well for a straightforward labour and birth.

Sunny's been teething over the past few month, he's 3 and 1/2. Got some lovely gaps in his incsiors & so far only found one tooth cap (kept it of course much to OH's horror!) He usually only goes off his haylage for a day, manages to eat sloppy food, and is generally a bit soppy & glum "Cuddle me, touch me, me teeth hurt!" As he loves his food so much the first time I spotted him spitting his haylage out I wondered what wrong!

Thanks for the advice all, glad it will probably resolve itself but I'll keep a good eye on it and the girl who is going to look after them for me while Im 'indisposed' (!) is excellent so Ive no worries there. Good to know Im probably just being dizzy and hormonal worrying about nowt

Caryn, yes its my first. Very entertaining too given the hospital is an hours drive away on country roads when the weather is good.... Best part of a foot of snow here and apparently the road to the hospital was closed yesterday (my due date!). Not panicking though, we have snow chains for the car, several offers of borrowed 4x4s if nec and if it really goes Pete Tong then I will be taken to hospital by tractor, though it will probably take 2 hours and I'll end up with a farmer with hands the size of shovels on midwife duty!!!

My yearling broke two teeth last winter when she was a foal and started doing this, it took me ages to convince the Dentist that it was her teeth, he and vet then came out and removed the loose bits leaving the rest in, i am keeping an eye on her this winter to make sure she has no problems.

When Herb was 3.5 years old he had to have his wolf teeth removed because they were too long and sharp for his bit and were upsetting him then , about 9 months ago ( Herb now 8 ) caught him quidding and hes had to have his teeth rasped which wasnt very nice but hes doin ok now!!!

Just an update, had the dentist out last night in minus 15(!), Mali had 2 retained caps he just wasn't shifting himself and also some sharp edges causing cheek ulcers. He is now making up for lost time on the haylage front

At minus 18 Mon and Tues night and never above minus 10 til yesterday afetrnoon I cant blame baby for the present no show!

As you say helped keep me warm through 2 1/2 hours worth of dentals in -15 degrees. Vet couldn't believe it when he had to defrost his sedative in a bucket of warm water before the final horse and then his power drill froze solid so he had to finish by hand, luckily it was the naughty pony last and he didn't need much!

Hoping now we are above freezing bubs may dain to make an entrance... If not I have til Monday though may beg for an extention! NOBODY MENTION THE 'I' WORD!!!!!!
