hiya, hoping for some feedback to start with - I have just bought a new dressage saddle - I love it and want to use it obviously for dressage and also for the showring next yr.
I wanted to purchase a dressage saddle as opposed to 'just a show saddle' as I think I will get more use..but it is black.. will this be really detrimental in the ring? I will post some pictures of us at the weekend but I will have to purchase a new bridle ( oh dear) lol , for showing to match I know brown is more 'pc' but does anyone else show in black and its okay? ramak is the grey in my signature..thanks! xx

We have always shown in black with all our horses and never found a problem, But thats just at local and county level. No wait we did the nationals a few years ago with a black working hunter saddle in the novice ridden. I honestly dont know would a judge put you down the line because of the colour of your tack ? |

I have always felt that it is better to match colour with horse i.e.I have a dark bay gelding with a black mane, tail and black points. He looks far better in black tack.Similarly ,I also used to show our old stallion who is chestnut ,in havana tack. The same goes for the browbands not too loud and try to blend them in with jacket and colour of horse.Mind you I have seen the most fab blingiest browband for my boy for next year!! Just a bit louder than I would normally choose but it's gonna look great!! |

Brown tack is correct for showing. This is because years ago there was no Black tack! Black was used originally when cheaper imported tack came into the UK and the Black colouring was used to cover the quality of the leather. Black became very fashionable when Dressage started to really take off over here. As the contentals had been using Black way before we had over here.
You will never be put down for wearing Black tack (when I am judging it certainly would not make any difference to me what colour the tack was). However personally it is a real dislike of mine to see it, so I would never buy Black.

Brown is correct but as Louise says you shouldn't get marked down for using black.
Black can look good on horses of certain colours, just like brown really. |

Some judges don't like dessage saddles especially the deep seated ones, or ones with large knee rolls. |

I have brown tack, did have black until recently!
I always find that brown tack suits chestnuts - which is the reason why Nadem wears brown tack, however, i may revert to black tack in regards to what colour the horse is :D
At the end of the day, when iit comes to saddles. If it fits your horse properly, and enables them t be at their best. Does it really matter about the colour?
I do agree with Louise thoughh, i do prefer brown tack to black :)

hi thanks for the feedback so far i do prefer the brown( for showing) if I am honest but I now have a very nice Jessica Ideal Saddle (which isnt too obtrusive) so I think most judges will find this comfortable too ride in. As a grey I think he looks better in Black and others on the yard say he looks 'smarter' in it ..but I am relieved to know that I wont get marked down for this thats really good to know - who knows..if I am really good santa might buy me a new brown show saddle as well! lol |

I had a black Jessica i showed in, i loved it, and so did judges! Just local unaffiliated showing, but it did the job very well. If you want to make it look more showing-like, you could have the girth straps cut to a 'normal' length - i know a few people that have done this :-) |

I prefer brown but I use synthetic tack which is black. I can't afford to buy new tack so I just try to make the most of what I have. I only show at local level and I don't think it has ever been detrimental to our placing. |

I have been debating this myself, I prefer black and think i am going to go with the black. I agree with others as long as it fits the horse i dont see the problem. Hopefully wont get marked down for it |

I have a brown Ideal Ramsay it looks lovely on Arabi he is bay, but we now have a Warmblood mare who is dark bay and I think would look better in black tack! decisions decisions, as we wanted to do Dressage mainly but wouldn't mind trying a bit of showing as she has jumped and would easily do Working Hunter classes, so I don't really know what to do. |
