Well so far so good....each days see's a vast improvement, but still a long way to go!

I managed to hold him whilst grooming his whole body and picking out his two front feet! He is still struggling me lifting one of his back ones....even with help....so any tips welcome?

He is however very dependant on his friend, I know this is a good thing, but sometimes I think if he was more dependant on me life would be easier.....does that make me needy??

I didnt know which ones to post.....so have chosen a few....hope you dont get picture overload! here they come............

He does look really cheeky I love that first picture..

I would just keep doing what your doing now. Some take a lot longer than others to get used to handling but the clue is little and often.

When i bought my mare many years ago, she was 18 months old. She was born in the field which the owner called his mares and foals field. They were all wild and untouched and not used to human handling at all.

It took me 3 months before i could even touch her... and then another month after that before i could get a head collar on her.

I went every day (as they were fed hay, short feed and carrots every day due to poor grass). They all stood their distance while you spread the hay and feed out and then as soon as you moved away they dived in. Because the field was so big i had no chance of cornering her off from the others, so it had to be her choice to come to me and let me touch her. (with lots of bribery from carrots)

Once i could get the head collar on her i used to lead her slightly away from the others to feed her and started touching her body and legs etc. None of it was easy as she is very opinionated but we did get there in the end.

When she was 2 and half we loaded her onto a lorry (which took nearly 4 hours) and took her back to the yard. Once back at the yard out of her comfort zone, she totally put her trust in me and was really submissive. She was introduced to boots, rugs, brushing, etc and i even put a bit in her mouth and an old saddle on her. She didn't put a hoof wrong. We kept her in for about 3 weeks and just spent time playing with her and then i put her back out with the others.

She was fine after this and even new the sound of my car when i pulled up at the field. We backed her at 3 and half and rode her gently (in walk only) for about 3 months, then i turned her away again (to finish growing up) and brought her back in at 4 and half. She was an absolute star to back, she just turned into a monster when she reached 5 and half and got into her stroppy teenage years (which she has never really grown out of ).

Sorry for long post but it helps to know you are not the only one having problems. Just keep doing what you are doing and try a little handling each day and i'm sure in no time at all he will be fine. Good Luck

sab2...think he is probably part spring lamb and part.....ooooohhhh I can think of many!

Any tips most welcome!
I am in abit of a dilemma at the moment as he is out with another colt, we plan for them to live out this winter with cosy field shelter, twice daily feed(suregrow) and adlib hay.
However he is very reliant on the ther colt, and tends to look to him for all the answers....I do lead him away from the other colt, to groom and generally play with.... but it isnt always easy!
The yard is a friends yard, beautiful grazing, but no other facilities, and no electric...and as I work full time (currently visit twice a day) it is going to be very difficult to do anything monday to friday due to the lack of light!! (I pay for my friend to do all feeding etc...so pratically on full field livery).
My other ridden horse is on full livery at another yard (approx 40 mins away from this one..I live somewhere in the middle of the two!), but I didnt take him styraight there as although they have excellant facilities, arena's, round pens, floodlighting etc.....I was thinking he wouldnt have any compnay and really wanted him to be 'a boy' for a while, but I am now doubting myself? Have I done the right thing?
Travelling to and from them both is proving a nightmare too!!

I knew it would be hard, but with the bad weather and dark nights it will no doube get harder still!

The trick to get them right is to post a picture per line, so just add new line before the image (immediately before the starting [img] ta)g and a new line after the image (immediately after the [/img] tag). This was all I did to fix your pictures.
Posting them like this is essential to get them to display nicely and also to make sure the flow of text is not interrupted by the images.
You can think the rule is one pic per line, and you can't go wrong if you do that.

Incasha I did pretty much the same thing as you this year. I sent my mare and foal away to be weaned and when they came back I split them up and sent the baby to a stud where he could have company with other youngsters for the summer. I really wanted him to spend time with other horses as he had only been with his mother and a nanny pony and was just far too big for his boots.

He had a great few months and really learned a lot of horse language (helped that he was gelded whilst away too) but like you I found it very hard going to two different places every day although more than that I just really missed him. He has come back now a much mellower little chap and with a lot of respect for his mother !

I'm on my own like you and it is really difficult and frustrating trying to pick up back legs, put on rugs etc with no-one to hold them. I do always do it in the stable though but do worry that if I did get kicked or licked to death no-one would notice for some time .

Absolutely love your photos, he is so cute !

Thanks Jaj, I dont have the option of a stable where he is at the moment, and am finding it really hard! But I do have the option to move him, which I wasnt going to do until next spring, but then thinking by then he will be bigger and stronger, he hasnt been gelded yet either was going to wait until spring.......decisions decisions

MMmm, maybe move him to somewhere more manageable for your sanity?

I don't think that the vets would be keen on gelding him this late in the year because of the wet and mud. Mine was done in Spring so he was just over a year old .
