Hi I'm new to the site an not posted anything before! I have a dilema, I have owned my mare for about 5 years now and know a little of her past history. I know she has had healthy foals before (as was used as a broodmare)she was then sold and was put back in foal but know her last it died, I have recently found out that this was due to mastitsis, making it so she (understandably) wouldn't feed the foal. She is now 17 years of age but I am considering breeding from her next spring! She does have a little scarring from the mastitsis so would this affect her? Would apprieciate any advice on breeding from a mare who has had mastitsis in the past!

Apparently the lady had far too many horses, but its no excuse!!! luckily as she thought she was unable to breed sold her on and a few homes later she came to me as my first pony and has a home for life!!! She has the most lovely nature despite not having the best homes in the past!!!

Hi Alex, I have a mare that had maiden mastitis when she was only 2yrs old. She has been left with permanent hardened udders. She has since gone on to produce and feed six foals! Her milk production is not affected at all, even though the scarring to her was very extensive. Just get your vet to check her but I see no reason for her not to be able to produce milk for a new baby.
Thank you very much, the vet will be coming out in January for her vaccinations so she will be getting a full check then. But I was worried about her previous mastitsis as I couldn't find any talk of mares being bred who had already had the disease! You have put my mind at rest so all things going well she will have a brand new foal in about 18 months time!!!!
