Poor ollie has managed to break his skull. I went up to the stable on friday night to feed and noticed that there was blood in the feed bucket to realise his nose was bleeding from one nostril. He had a skin on top of his head and one of his banks was distured and a couple of scuffs on the wall so i thought he had got cast and banged his head. He seemed fine all other ways no marks. So sat the yard owner informed me he had come in from the field with the hair taken of his head but his nose wasn't bleeding. So it was still bleeding sat and sun and on sunday I had a good luck at his head and found he had a soft spot which is a bit dinted in so I phoned the vet on monday and and he said he would try and get out mon but more than likely tues as his nose wasn't bleeding massively. so he came up today had a look checked his glands etc and told me he has actullay broken the skull He hasn't distured the underlayer only the top layer as other wise he wouldn't be still with us and reccommened to leave it to heal on its own. He said we can operate to pull the sunken parts back out so it wont be so dented in but said he would rather leave it alone. So fingers crossed it heals well and he doesnt lay too many new layers of bone down He said I could prob work away with him but I think I will give him some time off and let it settle As I am sure it is uncomfotable for him.

Poor boy! I've known of two similar cases, one was my friend's WB x Welsh who managed to bang his head whilst travelling, and then completed a Pleasure ride before anyone realised - it was later noticed that when he breathed, the skin on his forehead inflated and deflated but it healed on its own as it was only a crack (and didn't manage to knock any sense into him, did it Tanya [lurking, as usual])!!

The other was on a foal, she was found with a large piece of wood enbedded in her skull (really ) and when it was removed the Vet said she had also just cracked the inner bone, but not displaced it. The skull/skin was thought to have healed but the following spring the scab dropped off, leaving a hole you could put a finger in! Her sinus was infected so that was cleared up and the filly had a bone graft. She's now about 20 years old and just has a small dent under the forelock, so you'd never know what had happened.
