My beautiful Ettie (Dlani Dudette) was put to sleep yesterday morning. I feel numb, as it was so very unexpected. Last month she was diagnosed with hip disease - although I knew it was the end of her ridden career I thought that I would be able to keep her as a companion, as she was only seven.
She went for her check up at the vets (after the glucosimine injection a month before). She was considerably worse and the vet didn't think it would be kind to keep her as a companion and that she probably wouldn't survive the winter. This was the horse I had seen cantering around the field a day before.
So we made the sad decision to put her to sleep before she was in any more pain than she already was. We had already noticed severe changes in her behaviour over the last fortnight.
Despite her not being ridden since March (when we first worked out something was wrong) we have had our most successfull year, winning our first ever 1st place in a riding club show in PBA inhand and then going on to become Reserve Champion. I think it was Alethea on here that judged it - if it was, thank you so so much, you made our year.
We also came 4th at the SEAHG show in the pba inhand and then when I started riding her again (after tildrins, to see if there was a change) everything suddenly seemed to click, she schooled beautifully for me.
I have always said she was my Jekyll & Hyde pony, as she has always been mecurial, one moment amazing and the next difficult. Maybe in the end it was her hips all along.
Anyway I thought I would show you some photos in tribute to my beautiful quarab.
My greyhound x giraffe pony - the first time I went to go and see her three years ago. She'd only just been broken in and we fell in love with her even though she was completley unsuitable.
A couple of years later. One moment of togetherness, caught forever on camera. We went on to compete in a dressage test and get a disastarous (though actually our highest ever) 54%
Last summer when we came 5th in the Sunshine Tours in SJ. One of my favourite photos. She just went like she had never gone before, jumping beautifully and turning on a sixpence.
This year at the GDRC show where we came 1st. The most perfect day ever. She hadn't been out the yard for three months and my normally nutty pony, was an absolute angel.
And finally, the one photo that sums Ettie up completley...
Bye bye my beautiful girl.

So sad to hear of the loss of your beautiful girl. I remember the pictures of the carousel jump. You will clearly cherish your short time with your lovely lady, and take comfort in the memories of your successes. You were very brave to take the decision not to let her suffer. RIP Ettie. |

Miska, I am so sorry to hear your sad news! It brought me to tears, and heart ache of a time two years ago when I lost my special boy tragically to colic. Time is a great healer but you will never forgot those psecial moments that belong to you and your girl! Sending big ((((HUGS)))) Here is a poem a friend sent to me when I lost my boy, I do hope it brings you some cmforat as it did me. xxx
I'll lend you for a little while My grandest foal, He said, For you to love while she's alive And mourn for when she's dead.
It may be one or twenty years, Or days or months, you see. But, will you, till I take her back, Take care of her for me?
She'll bring her charms to gladden you, And should her stay be brief, You'll have treasured memories To bring solace in your grief.
I cannot promise she will stay, Since all from earth return. But, there are lessons taught on earth I want this foal to learn.
I've looked the wide world over In my search for teachers true. And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes With trust I have selected you. Now will you give her your total love, Nor think the labor vain,
I know you'll give her tenderness And love will bloom each day. And for the happiness you've known Forever grateful stay.
But should I come and call for her Much sooner than you'd planned, You'll brave the bitter grief that comes And someday understand. Nor hate Me when I come To take her back again?

So very sorry to hear this news. It is always heartbreaking, but seems even sadder when the parting comes at such a young age. The poem is heartbreaking, too, but I think it says it all - since it first appeared on AL, and I printed it to keep, I have lost two horses, so I understand only too well how you are feeling. You have been very brave to make the decision and you have some beautiful photos and wonderful memories which I hope will comfort you in times to come. Sue x |
