The yard where I used to keep Magic had rugs stolen off the horses backs in the field last night! Just a message to Yorkshire people to be aware. Thieving gits!!

Oh no that is a worry, mind you I don't think you would get near Arabi at the moment I couldn't even catch him last night, hooning round like a nutter he was.

Thanks for that... Yes, my next door neighbour nearly had their trailer stolen a few nights ago too (Batley area)... Fortunately they couldn't cut the chain on the gate!

If the Rugs have giant Post Codes on them, they will have a job to sell them, especially if they take them 100 away and try to pass them off, of at a sale. Rugs (and any property) marked with a post cade will/can go on the National Computer and can be identified to you.
We managed to get 70 saddles back that were stolen with post codes. every one went back to the owner who was in three counties away (200miles). Distance is never any problem..things travel.
Someone in Wolverhampton who lost his rugs, spotted them and his post codes on horses in Cannock, not too far away, he took the copper with him to get them back...
Get the paint pots out folks and get all your horse tack & rugs marked with a post code. Also you need to put up signs that say all the propewrty is marked and can be identified.
Anyone caught with stolen post coded stuff,and its not theres, can be prosecuted, help the police do their job, they love locking folks up..

| The police crime prevention officer has given me some indelible marker pens and gave me the tip that if you put this on and spray an acrylic clear paint from Halfords over the top it is almost impossible to remove. Have a word with your local police station and they will supply the necessary pens etc. The police have been very kind to us following 2 break ins at our yard in 7 weeks. They would rather prevent than have all the trouble of solving I guess. Better for all of us. |

You can always make a stencil of your post code and use car spray paint if you want a less 'freestyle' effect (On your rugs, not your leather goods  ). |

ON THE RUGS and bigger things wheelbarrows and tubs etc.etc..
I aways use white paint(exterior Paint wont wash off) and use a 1" Brush and paint letter about 10" 12" high, the length of the rug, so everyone can see it..both sides... Dont hide it..seeing it is part of the deterant.
Leather Saddles can be post coded with small leather stamps, I keep a full set A -Z & 0- 9, and have marked hundreds of saddles over the years, usually, under the flap just behind the strirrup leather (not where they can be cut out) and then put the post coded down the gullet under the saddle. with an ultra violet pen or a perminent marker... Take phorographs...Some we have marked, the girls also had the horses names stamped on the flap too. If you sell the saddle you'll put a X at the start and end of the post code. Its not pretty, and you;ll have to take care with the leather...but it can work and if its recovered by the police, you should get it back and the police might have the proof they need for a lock up..
We had saddles stolen locally and the next day they were presented for sale, at a horse auction in Wales. We got them back the police arrested two men. Police need to prove they are stolen and who they belong too.
If you were nearer to me, I'd mark them for you..
Ask the police in your area, if anyone has these leather stamps and can do it for you. Post codes do work, but you them need to put up signs saying they are marked. They'll leave the marked ones and take those that are not.

You can try places like The Range and Pound shops for number/letter stamps (Blackspur make a set about 1/4" high). You can also buy them from the Tandy Leathercraft stores in Northampton and Matlock, but they are more expensive.
All our rugs are postcoded in HUGE letters, likewise the trailer, etc.

Thanks for that - in Baildon. Do you have to use a special paint though - don't want to rot the rugs or stop waterproofness?
Coming up a year since our yard was done - all tack saddles,bridles, rugs, quad bike. Worst feeling in the world - but then all can be replaced if the horses had been touched don't know what we would had done!

Hi. Just to warn you all that the thieving ba*****s are still in the West Yorkshire area. Did my horses at 7am this morning then went back at 5.30pm and they've stolen my mare's rug off her back during the day. They also kindly relieved me of some bags of feed. I'm between Leeds and Wetherby so they may be on their way North?!
I was only reading this thread the other day and planned to get painting but obviously I'm too late! |

| Impy, was that the Riding Habit in Queensbury? When I was riding in Halifax on thursday the yard owner there said somewhere nearby had had a load of stuff stolen. Also a lady that rung me this morning about some rugs I am selling had hers stolen from Scholes near Bradford. They are bloody everywhere! |

Yes it was - I wasn't sure if I could name names or not. I went straight back home routed through garage and found a tin of white spray - our once beautiful blue Amigo winter rug ( bit chilly at my yard!!) now has my postcode at one side and his freeze mark number on the other. I wouldn't of forgiven myself if his rug had gone off his back last night.
