I posted on the general dicussion forum about my daughter's new pony Woody which had come out in hives about 3 weeks after we bought him. Long story but initially everyone happy that hives had been caused by overheating and this theory had also been supported by the previous owner. Steroid injection given by vet and they more or less fully cleared. Hives back with a vengeance two days later. He was then put on 50 Piriton pills a day by vet. No improvement but no worse. I went to yard tonight and just about had a heart attack when I saw him - whole body and head covered in countless hives. Daughter inconsolable. Spoke to my vet (who also liveries there)- no idea what is causing the hives but heat now looking unlikely and more likely to be an allergy. (We live near coast in NE Scotland. Vet has suggested blood tests. YO suggesting aloe vera to boost immune system and thinks blood tests a waste of time. I had also started Global Herbs Restore and Sacr - X for lumps 2 days ago after the steroid injection. I now frankly feel like bashing my head off a wall. I don't know which way to turn. Can anyone help???

Oh my lord, how very distressing for you and your daughter, not to mention the pony. I have nothing helpful to add but just wanted to wish you and the pony well and hope it all clears up very soon.

My 2 year old filly was covered in huge bumps last week - entire body from ears to tail - her face was so swollen her eyes were shut. Within 24 hours she had gone back to normal - my vet said he had seen a lot of it this year.....
Hope your little one is soon back to normal

My stallion got hives after I changed his joint supplement. I took him off the new one and put him back on Cortaflex and he has never had them since. I knew that was very likely to be the cause as it was the only thing that had changed in his routine/diet.

I would suggest stopping any feed/supplements and see if they go. If they do then be careful what you give him as severe reactions can cause anaphalactic shock and be fatal. Change his feed and introduce hard feed very slowly; I would suggest trying a different brand.

Hope he improves and you manage to sort out what is causing the problem.

Many thanks guys for your replies - Woody's hives are now going as fast as they originally appeared. Various theories but mystery unsolved. Will continue to try and boost his immune system and keep fingers crossed that it was a one of ...
