Mine is around £40 standard call out (I say around as it seems to change each time lol!), £90 emergency - they are about 40 mins away though! Still think it's a rip off when they then charge you on top examin & advise and then for each thing they do - even a seperate charge for putting a needle in! Should have been a vet!!!

Our standard call out charge is £27.50 - we are about 8 miles from the vets. However, they have also have set days where call out is free to certain areas for routine/non emergency pre booked appointments. This means that they do not travel all over the county giving flu jabs and rasping teeth and we get free call out.

£25 call out, we're a couple of miles away. However, consultation is only £15.

I use two vets one is about an hr and ten mins away and they charge £50 but never charge an opinion charge !! The local vets are 5 mins away and also charge £50 and £15 for their valued opinion even when I'm telling them !!

£35 call out and another £40 for their opinion!!!! I was a tad shocked as was only at stables for 5-10 mins total! I have found another vet that does not charge call out for standard things like jabs if carried out on a certain day of the week!
£40 for a 5 minute chat - I still think thats ridiculous! It was only £45 for the scan the following week which took nearly an hour!

ouch!!!! Our callout (booked) is around £25 and very rarely is there an 'examine' charge as it's usually part of the item (eg; scan mare PD, or routine dental), and he wouldn't dare charge for each needle etc! They are 15mins away, and main horse vet lives aruond the corner

call out fee was one of the reasons i changed vet, living right next to a very large racing yard, who have a vet going to most days, especially during the foaling season,
so used to ring up for routine vacs, which then was told the vet could fit me in after being at said racing yard, a few hundred yards away, and when the bill came realised i was getting a full call out of £40!!!!!! and this happen quite a few times,

so got new vet that does my area on a Monday for routine stuff free of charge for a pre booked appointment , now happy

We also have a set day which is free so always use that. Not sure what the fee would be if they had to come on a different day though. Hoping not to find out!

Hmmnn... Interesting thread this!

My vet charges 20.00 plus VAT call out fee (we are 2 miles from the surgery) and 95.00 per hour plus VAT for consultation time.

My little mare was away at stud this summer and while she was away she was scanned. The total bill inc VAT was only 67.50 - so very reasonable compared to what I would have paid at home!

Makes you think...

Ours is £35 call out charge, £30 flue & tet and £35.25 for teeth. They are about 3 miles away. The call out charge can be shared amongst the number of horses so it pays to all book dental and jabs at the same time. There are 7 horses on our yard so if we split it we would only pay £5 per horse.

I just changed to this vet as my other one charged £35 call out, £15.00 travel expenses and then £35 examination fee..... This was before he even looked at the horse. He was coming to our yard for someone else and i asked for some ventipulmin for my mare as she was a bit weezey. He said he needed to listen to her chest first and then proceeded to charge me £15.00 for travel, £30 to listen to her chest and £17.50 visit fee (half of the normall £35) plus the £60 for the drugs....! I was horrified.

I know vets have to make a living and i know they study for a long time to become a vet and then work hard and very long hours, but i do think this is a rip off

My vet charges £32 call out but if she is going to one of the other yards she tries to tie us in with them and splits the call out.

My vets do like to charge BUT they are good and wouldn't change them! We've just had 3 examine & advises refunded when we queried them as 1 was when they were dropping off meds as they 'were passing', 1 they came to take a blood test and we weren't there so 'no examine' and can't remember the other one - think it was another blood test (we see them alot lol!) but got nearly £100 back!

I can't complain about my vet usually I don't get charged a call out fee and lucky to get charged at all I am 1 and half mile up road from work, so usually when he is out at work I would get him to call up and do mine for vac or dental etc and usually doesn't charge or about 20 at most. He recently went and pulled kiara's wolf teeth had about 20 min drive, sedation and teeth pulled and it only cost me £20 he works on his own so has no real big over costs works from home so he can afford to be very reasonable

Our callout is £31 and then £2 per minute 'horse time'. They are very good, come straight away to emergencies, give lengthy advice over the phone and always ring back if the vet you want to speak to is not available when you call. Quite a few of us on the yard use the same practice so we have a block booking for jabs to split the callout.

I love our vets, they have no call out charge for clients under 30 miles away - we are about 22 miles
Neither have they put up their rates to compensate, and even better, the male vets are all pretty nice to look at

Our vets visit my area free on Thursday.... usually ,my day off! Result.
My cynical mind thinks they will make it up somewhere else.
Must admit tho when they had to come out daily to Ali with his castration complications, they didn't always charge me...

Sorry everyone , this may be a bad time to post this as it is the end of a long hard breeding season, I am exhausted and yet again have not seen my horses in daylight today, last w/e I was 'off call' but still worked and operated Sat and Sun, ( I was up at 5am bathing Bryn for the Crabbet show that I couldn't go to because I was needed at work), I worked the previous 2 w/e and have just got in now from work 9.45 pm, that is NOT a particularly late night for me, so feeling a bit sore about another vet bashing post. I have just worked out that last week I earned just under £9 per hour counting only 'normal' hours but if on call is counted as working as well... and our feet often don't touch the ground when we are on call.... then I earn about £4.90 per hour. Our outgoings are ....drugs,consumables, staff wages( vets, nurses, yard staff, reception, night phone answering staff), vet vehicles to maintain, diesel, phones in constant use, building to heat, light etc, shavings, haylage and feed ( all high quality), rent, insurance, professional indemnity (£££), loan repayments, RCVS membership, maintenance on radiography equipment, anaesthetic machine, scopes, scanners etc CPD etc etc etc not to mention a huge bad debt owed us , common to most equine practices... and yes we still visit clients who owe us loads because all they have to do is say ... he is hopping lame/ colicy/ whatever and we will be there 'cos the horse is the important one in all this. We try to always provide the best service that we can we will always go the extra mile for a horse, simply because we love them ... we are SO NOT 'in it for the money', and we are available every minute of every day of the year. We can only earn money three ways ... fees, call outs or drug markup, the on line pharmacies ( who BTW don't have all the costs that I listed above and get drugs massively cheaper than we can partly due to bulk and partly due to different licenses) can easily undercut us on this .
We charge 3 different call out charges (25, 30 and 40 I think) , depending on distance and do 'zone visits' (£15) in each distant area one day a week. We are horse owners too, many of our clients are friends as well as valued clients, we want to provide the best service we can at a reasonable rate.... oh I am going to shut up now but please if anyone knows how we can provide a high standard caring service 24/7 for peanuts please let me know!
Don't get me wrong I LOVE my job it is a privilege to do it it but it is wearying that so many people seem to make a hobby of vet bashing.... please believe me ... we, at least in our clinic and many others like us are, in actual fact on your side and trying our best!!
edited to say...... have read the thread properly now and so want to say sorry to lots of you who are not 'vet bashing'
BTW it is a lot easier to earn money in mixed practice, small animal work is a lot more lucrative and tb testing a reliable source of income in the large animal sector so it is easier for mixed practices to subsidise equine work than for purely equine practices to make ends meet, sorry to say that horse clients are also notoriously the worst payers (sure that doesn't apply to anyone on here).
I am very sorry to have whinged, I nearly deleted the whole post as a lot of you do clearly appreciate your vets, but thought at least I could explain where the money goes! sorry again

lisa

Ahh thanks Lynda ,
We value all our clients and their horses but we could NEVER have too many Arabs on our books, when I visit Arabs I always feel like I should not be charging AT ALL as the horses are such a joy to me
