...to seeing horses in the flesh and Malvern was truly a feast for the eyes. Among the horses that 'did it' for me were Plumbum, the Mr Gwiddy-Robyn partnership, Patros (mere 6yo) and of course Fiona's gorgeous, foot-perfect boy Azal and her truly genuine reaction on her supreme ridden win. Lovely to see
Margaret, Clare and breeder Paula's proud moment on receiving the WAHO trophy with 'Waddy' (Ibn Ajwaad) a great ambassador for the Arabian breed.
There were showmen (and women) with the X Factor: the charismatic Montoya colt Reflection, beautifully shown by Ryan Jones; Rod and the 'stonkingly' gorgeous filly foal Stivalery; and also the winning PBA foal who showed that 'look at me' air - Paujacq Royal Spice.
Another joy to watch was the beautiful veteran stallion Camargue Too who strutted his stuff with aplomb, looking better than ever. Satisfying my appetite for Crabbet there were lovely ladies Maiad, Red House Zinderella and of course the talented lad Marcus Aurelius, superbly ridden by Kirsty Brown.
It was great to see Alf Hallworth enjoying being back in the ring with his veteran Anglo mare Fying Pirouette who took res res veteran champion too - a classy old bird! She was res female to the very smart mare Misunderstood
I was also drawn to a little black stallion ridden by Scherie Dermody in the dressage and western classes. A versatile steed indeed as he is a seasoned endurance horse turning a hoof to new pursuits.
Another that caught my eye while executiing a lovely dressage test was the stallion Romanic Ranger with Doug up.
It was nice to see 'Kit' (aka Vlacq Boogie Knights)as I hadn't seen him since a yearling. Now 3 and grown into a very handsome (rather too playful) lad.
He was there with his 1/2 brother the Anglo stallion (by our old boy Hipu Who), Kamal Ibn Dara. Ever the Mr Cool he was ridden to perfection as usual by Froggy.
We kept peeping over the shoulder of artist Leslie Benenson who did some amazing pastel drawings of Vlacq Hamra Ishara and Camargue Too.
It was slightly odd to be there without a horse or two in tow but it left us free to roam and enjoy the show. Well done to Sal and the team - a great show and worth all their hard work. Plus all those that prepared their horses so beautifully for us to enjoy. It even stayed DRY. Mr Bumble hasn't forgiven us for leaving him at home, he would have loved to play with Chico.
Until next year... Mrs V senior.
