I've decided to get Ettie a new bridle to show her in. I can't decide between a ridden bridle or an inhand one. I don't think I will be doing any ridden showing this year, whereas I will be doing inhand- so it's whichever one people think she will look best in.

I haven't a clue on bridles. When I last showed her inhand, I showed her in the below bridle with a snaffle, with reins over her head. I know some people show their pbas with double bridles with reins over head...but I don't think Ettie suits double, as it looks too big for her dainty head but would value peoples opinions.

(a pic showing her head shape a bit more)

So suggestions? I have an average budget - I definitley want it to be havanna.

Also what do you think of this as a browband?

If not, are there any cornerstone ones you think would suit her (I like the style of their browbands).

Thank you!

RIP Ettie 2003 - 2010

I think the double suits her, though I's shorten the sliphead a few holes to put the snaffle ring in a better position. Ideally I'd use one with billet fittings, rather then the buckle-back ones you have so there is no metal work on show. The front part of hte noseband should sit a little higher, though the back portion is fine so maybe she had just rubbed it in that pic? lovely pic btw!
Browband needs to be a thicker/wider one really to balance the overall look - like the one you've picked, just check it's horse weight (7/8") not pony weight
So I don't think you need to spend a lot - just your browband and a new sliphead (often you need to buy a shorter cheekpiece for these pbas than the one supplied.)

Thank you! There seems to be so many options!

Do you think a straight forward pelham would look better than a rugby?

I don't think the noseband of the above bridle is very good, because it is raised and used to be a flash, until a cut the flash bit off...so it's not the best. What type of noseband do you think will suit her?

The pelham might be neater yes, and even less to spend! A flat noseband or the raised (not piped) ones look lovely on pbas. Sabre and Jeffries do good ones. They have a subtle shape to them without looking bulky, similar to hunter in hand bridles.

I'd prefer to see her in a 'normal' pelham, or you can get a show pelham with the snaffle ring as a loose ring which i think looks smart:

I really like a flat cavesson noseband, she wouldnt need a very thick one as shes got such a pretty head - definately no more than 1" width.

I like the browband! Though i think she's look really nice in a royal/white/red one too :-)

Which do you think is better, a show pelham or a normal pelham (for inhand)?

I saw this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220549020465&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

It's not a mullen, but it has a lozenge, which Ettie may prefer.

I like the sabre champion and jeffries wemberly bridles...might have to find a tack shop that has them, as its always nice to see a bridle before buying.

Thank you both for your help!

Well I ended up buying a GFS show bridle on ebay for £27 - brand new! The colour isn't the best as it is very dark but the leather is lovely and soft. It looks black in the pictures but it is brown.

I also ended up buying the blue and silver browband...it looks huge (as in thickness not length) but it looks quite snazzy.

Then to round off the look I got the lozenge show pelham - which is also great.

I was just wondering with the show pelham does she have to have a slip head? The only one I have is the one in the first pic which has bucles not billets.

Ettie in her new show gear:

(sorry about the awful pic - light was bad and she looks silly as she isn't plaited). Is the noseband in the right place?

Thank you

Personally I would say the noseband is two high, you should you should be able to get two fingers below the cheek bone on each side and the noseband. At least that is what I was always told.

All pelhams should only have one connection to the headpiece of the bridle and do not need a sliphead. Slipheads are only required if you have two bits.

I'd also pop the noseband down a hole or two. She is beautiful & the browband is lovely!

I was also taught that the noseband should be two fingers below the cheek bone. Well done for getting such a bargain!

Great - thank you! I thought it was a bit high.

That's good that I don't need to buy a slip head - I like the simple look of the bridle. I still can't believe how big the browband is, I am so used to her wearing one like in the top pic

Where would I be without AL to answer all my showing questions?

Looks good, with the noseband dropped a little. And a lip strap and curb chain of course. Browband looks lovely
(Slipheads only for double bridles or true rugby type pelhams witha mobile snaffle ring)

Great - I have both lip strap and curb chain, but was in a rush so forgot to put them on for the photo.

I think the show show pelham looks tons better than the rugby and will be alot nicer with the lozenge if I decide to show her ridden again in the future

Can't wait to show her this weekend - let's hope the weather is nice!
