Borris started with his left eye running a bit last week, thought he had summat in it, it was clean and the eye was not red or inflamed. SO i just wiped it clean and made sure he was fly lotioned. Didn't go yesterday as was horrid work day, so my frined I share the field did them but didn't mention anything.
Today they are both running, and there are mark down his face where it has dried, but again he does not seem bothered by them, trying to rub or anything, and they don't look sore.
Any ideas - am i being thick missing something???? Pollen allergy????It's awful not having a horse for 25 years then trying to remeber all the stuff you are sure you once knew

the flies have been awful so far this year  mine come in during the day, and out at night, but I expect the flies are troubling him, fly repellents dont work for long. if it gets worse keep him in during the hottest time of day, I have just had one of my mares tear ducts syringed because they were blocked, it may be he has tthe same problem , if it persists ask the vet . |

| He lives out and I have no stable facilities. There is shade in the field but its a bit sparse some times of the day. I was thinking of getting him a mask. The other 2 have them as they have specific eye problems, but i have not got him one as he has a long forelock to help him. I will look at getting one tomorrow. |

Hi Debz My mare got a runny eye last week like you have discribed her's is all most cleared, i have been bathing it each day. I have some long grass in my field and think she may have got a grass seed in it. Do you have any long grass? Also if you are buying a fly mask i would also buy a cheapy fly fringe (only about £2.50) as my mare gets her mask off, I put it on next day it is laying in field |

It'll be the flies. I have mine in the Equilibrium Midi Fly Mask with ears  Wouldn't be without them, they are brilliant.

Tea bags!
Take a couple of used tea bags and pop them in the fridge overnight in a plastic bag with a tiny bit more water. Then next day put them against the eye and squeeze so that the weak tea washes into the eye. Use a different tea bag for each eye. Repeat as often as you need to - a few times a day if needed but it usually helps clear it up within a day. The tannin in the tea acts as a mild antiseptic. |

I also think it must be the flies... My mare cant be out without her fly mask in the summer... and last week I found fly eggs just next to my boys eye, so now he has a mask on as well.
regarding the fly mask does the Cashel fly masks Arab size fit nicely?... I am struggling a bit have 2 old ones from Bucas, and have been buying several from the tack shop that I have had to return as they are too narrow over the forehead which is resulting in them pressing against the eyelashes... the rest of the mask fits perfect.
I would like all mine to have masks on... the foal is not having problems, and I doubt it is possible to get a fly mask her size anyway. |

| Littlearabians the Cashel fit Arabi perfect he has a very wide head and nose but his face is quite short, I have same trouble with eye rubs with other masks, there not the cheapest but they are worth it. |

do you use the full face ones with ears?
mine are currently in the Bucas ones, but I have cut off the ears to make them fit better, as they did tend to take them off when the ears was on... they don't seam to have any fly problems around their ears, but the mare does on her nose. |

I've had to have the Vet to Rhoubi this week.
She didn't seemed bothered by the flies at all.
Monday morning when I got up she had a slight gummy discharge from her left eye. I bathed it, put in my old favourite Golden Eye Ointment & turned her out. When I got back from work Monday evening it looked as though she had been hit in the eye with a plank
Called the Vet, he came out and gave her an examination. He is pretty sure its just conjunctivitis and nothing more sinister so she is one treatment for that & is responding well.
Prior to the gunk on Monday morning Rhoubi had no sign of anything, so don't leave it too long before you seek medical advice.

Debsnboz I notice your horse is out 24 hours and am just a bit concerned about masks in the dark! Unless you are up half the night yourself you wouldn't be able to take it off at dusk and put it back on at dawn!
It could be that your horse has an allergy. The start date is spot on for this whereas flies have been around for a while. If that is the problem he will need a steroid cream (drops are hard to administer!) in each eye once a day. One of mine has Maxitrol ointment once a day....instant cure. You will need to call the vet out initially but he/she will probably repeat the prescription after that. My filly starts with the runny eye (becomes sore if unattended) in the last week in June every year; it stops in September. Possibility? |

Hi... I'm suspecting buttercups are making my Boris' eye runny. Do you have any in your field? I am currently getting rid of them in the third paddock but when he was in there after I topped the field his eye ran again. Worth a thought?

My two that are out during the day both have runny eyes - so I bathe them daily - and the Dartmoor pony who is the worst - has a fly fringe on. I am sure it is the flies - as the two who go out at night don't have a problem.
they all wear fly rugs constantly - and I would like a fly mask for my Darty - but her head is too small for any of the pony masks I have found. |

regarding fly masks in the night.
mine are wearing their masks on full time summer turnout, and my mare has done ever since I bought her... I have never had any trouble because of this. |

| Bit of a runny eye for my mare as well, last year couldn't get a mask near her but this year insisted (along with bribary) and she's fine have always used the Cashel Arab ones brilliant worth every penny and always make sure I've got a spare as well for when the other is washed. |

I've also left a fly mask on Roger 24/7 and have not had any problems with them in the dark!

| I have been using a herbal eye wash for my mare from Barrier animal health you just wipe it on and it has been quite good although i am going to try Templars teabag treatment , wonder what my other half will think when he comes home from work to find used teabags in the fridge. |

| the tea bag works a treat. We always use it at the first sign of eye weepness and clears it up almost instantly. |

Eyes were much better today. But yes there are lots of buttercups around.
Tea bags in the fridge ready, buying Equilibrium mask in morning. Our other 2 wear theirs 24/7 and as far as I am aware have always done so!!
So I will see how we get on with that arrangment. Thanks you all so much! |

| Cashel masks fit Arabs well littlearabians, one wears one without ears, the other has a long one with a nose bit which is excellent at stopping sunburn. They also occasionally wear their masks at night without any problems - another reason to leave the tactile hair alone |

| My mare used to sometimes get a swollen eye from flies I just bought some Brolene drops used twice a day soon goes in a few days, waste of money to call a vet if you know its just fly eye, I have always turned my horses out 24-7 with masks on, all of ours at our yard have them on at night none of them have ever had any problems with seeing in the dark. |
