Just wondering how many of you use them? Like 'Warning, these horses are microchipped' etc.
How effective do you think they are? Will they actually deter the horse thief? I'm just not sure. In fact I wonder if they could also attract attention be saying 'Hey, these horses are valuable so I got them microchipped'
Then I start to think, just how preventative is microchipping?? Or is it more an aid for return?
Sorry, just some random thoughts and questions as I ordered one of these signs but I'm still in two minds

If the signs are warning of loose dogs or Mains electric fencing that is one thing. Microchip or Freeze brand etc is a deterrent to some but an open invitation to others to see what else you may have..........locked up or otherwise!
CCTV signs but with no evidence of the camera is also an open invitation but an alarm box visible on the edge of a building may prove more useful. |

I have little tags that i've attached to rugs, head collars and fly masks that say " I have been microchipped". It's not as obvious as a large sign on the gate but if they get close enough to touch the horse or are thinking of steeling them they should notice the tag. You can get the tags from your microchip company. |

I've got two signs up - 'Hampshire Horsewatch' and 'All the horses on these premises are microchipped'. |

I was told that the real determind theives had a microchip scanner, they find it and take it out themselves. I was talking to a Farmer the other day, who is just down the road, I'd never spoken to him before but he told me that, a while back, he saw a van towing a trailer that looked like mine and he had called the police. Thought that was very nice of him considering he had never met me. However, he says the Police didn't do anthing; but luckily, it wasn't mine. I have 'Wez', who lives in a cottage overlooking the field, who is (sorry Wez), very nosey and does not miss a thing.
A stanger would fine it very hard to catch mine, except H, but Mats does not let strangers near her.
I noticed that I had left one of the electric fence energizers in the middle of the resting paddock, about 6 weeks ago, beside the public footpath which runs thru the field; and it was still there.
However, I do worry. |
