I thought I'd had my bad luck quota for the year losing Georgia last month and Sibelius had colic 10 days ago which I have since found the reason for....stupid people feeding him over the fence, suitably dealt with I can assure you

I arrived today to find Sibs in a real mess, some stupid person had left 3 field gates open, one of the fields has mares, foals and a little stallion running. I can only assume they all trundled down the lane to the fence line with Sibs and the little stallion doing what nature intended was trying to protect his mares. He managed to get over the fence into Sibs field and they have had a god almighty fight. It broke my heart as he whickered and came straight to me, put the flat of his head on my chest as if to say help me Mum

Sibs has so many awful bites all over him, the skin is puckering and will die off in places and this was him with a medium weight rug on because he'd recently been bathed, his beautiful neck and jaw are raw in places, he has a cut over his eye, his flanks and ribs have taken a hell of a knock and he has huge bites on them, the raised swellings are the size of tea plates and not surprisingly he is bloody sore. I don't want to imagine what he'd have been like without the protection of his rug. The worst of his injuries is a hole on the inside of his knee which has gone as far as the tendon sheath but we think the sheath itself is intact. Sibby is not an easy horse to medicate, he's extremely needle shy to the point of being very dangerous so we're unable to sedate him which is why we're not sure of the full extent of the damage.

My vet is an absolute hero for helping with him especially as the twice he has attended in the past he's been thrown about like a rag doll and also for being the calming influence when other stallions owner showed up......I'm afraid my anger got the better of me

On the plus side and because Sibby trusts me he gingerly let me hose and clean all of his wounds even the really sore one's he's had some danilon to try and dull the pain and help with the swellings. I have had to turn him back out so he keeps moving the damaged knee, even just an hour standing in his stable saw him seize up. He's got oral anti b's which is not the best but all we can get into him and I now just have to pray the knee heals without the intervention it really needs. I'm hoping once his pain meds have kicked in he'll let me clean it again and perhaps dress it....fingers crossed !

My poor quirky boy, it's not what you need at 20 years old

Aw, Lynn, you don't need this! I really hope that he will be okay. You can't be there 24 x 7 and other people can be so irresponsible. They just walk away while you are left to deal with the consequences.

Sorry to hear of Sibs injuries, hope he recovers soon.

My filly had an abscess in her hoof and had to have an injection (25mL) every day for 5 days. The first day she was OK, second day a bit jumpy and on the third day, no way. She knew what was coming and we couldn't get near her.

In desperation I decided to blindfold her and I fed her carrots while she was injected - it took quite a while to get it all in as it was quite thick and sticky. It worked a treat and we managed to get the final three injections done with no fuss at all.

Worth a try.

If you have a homeopathic vet in your area try to get asap some aconite (for shock and pain) but more importantly arnica, this will reduce swelling far more quickly and promote faster healing. Both are safe to use alongside other meds and you would be surprised at the difference they can make. Everyone should keep both in their first aid kit, aconite can make the difference between life and death in some cases, simply by dealing with the dangerous effects of shock, and can be used whilst waiting for the vet to arrive. You can also get it in pills from health food shops but the vet stuff is in a spray so easier to give and more suitable for large animals.

Oh, he obviously adores and trusts you and I can imagine how angry you were, especially when its not your fault yet you can't help feeling responsible. Please give him a big hug and kiss from me and remind him he's 20 years young and well loved.

I am so sorry to read of what has happened to your boy and hope that he will get better soon.

When you spend your life looking after them, loving and protecting them, it is all the more upsetting and frustrating when they are hurt and injured due to factors beyond your control.

As daintyarabs said previously, I can second the use of aconite and arnica. My friend who is very experienced in homeopathic medicine, gave some to Buffy, and I believe it kept her with us.

Sending hugs to you both.

Lynn

Sorry to hear about your boy.

Another thing you can use is Rescue Remedy. You can get the spray which is easy to give them.Another thing to keep in your first aid box.

How awful for you and your poor boy - hopefully he will astonish you with the way he recovers. One of my boys was very badly beaten up by a mare and looked like a dog's dinner for the first few days, but then he breezed through his recovery (and wasn't even put off the mare, LOL!)
