if you post the registered name ill have a look on net see what i can find. We are all concerned for the mare, at least the vet wil be out tomoz. Even non-novices buy with there heart not head, i did with rebel and 2 years on still paying vet bills etc.
Again well done carol for caring soo much about this mare. Fingers crossed vet visit is positive news for the mare x |

My parting 'shot' will have to be ......I hope any novice's out there ignore some of the nonsense you have been spouting....Or we really could be in trouble!
Pop...Your last comments have made me laugh so much! Going to have to change my underwear now !!
I can actually say what I like (Free Country ) and do what I like, as can you. Nothing better than a lively debate don't you think? Seeing what others views are. We have agreed to disagree, end of.
This has run it course now, neither will change the others views, I'm sure we will meet again, you never know perhaps we might find something we can actually agree on (If there was a shaking hands smilie I would use it )
Back to topic.....Carol, that advert is terrible!! Maybe a call to trading standards might help and if there really are others in the same condition as 'Lady' a rescue centre but don't hold your breath on that
If you want help any help with any 'digging' just PM me the details.....There is more that one way to skin a cat!
And before anyone jumps, I don't mean literally!

Oooh Ladies!!
Well today found out a few very interesting things, will not put the horses registered name on here as don't want her owner googling her name and leading it back here!!
Ive traced her history back to 2008 where she was used as a broodmare at a very reputable stud and had a foal to a lovely stallion. She was then sold after the foal was weaned and as far as they knew had been kept quite locally. The injury had been sustained about 9 years ago and correctly managed, they couldn't tell me if it was a break or not just that it had been treated before they got her and although unsightly was not meant to have caused her any pain once healed, although the change in gait etc.. now does look like bad arthiritis has set in due to the loss of fluid in the knee. When she was sold she was in good condition and was a very sweet mare, sold on as a companion. With a bit more digging i could probably find out where she went from then although it does look like whoever aquired her after this has just left her to starve, not sure at what point she ended up at the dealers?
I couldn't wait for the vet this morning as id been at the yard 3 hours already and my kids were driving me insane, he has been though so im waiting for them to let me know what the outcome is. Interesting to know though that she has managed on this leg for the last 9 years so that has alieviated my fears about turning her out with mine somewhat.
Still not got pics as the camera on my phone has frozen but will take some with the camera over weekend.
Hopefully more of an update later re what the vet thinks.
Unfortunately the girl that has bought her has become seriously overwhelmed with it all but luckily her partner has decided to step in and take over. He seemed quite peed off with her this morning but he is taking over responsibilities for her now and is much more practical and does listen. I could shake this girl (to put it mildly) and tell her to grow up (plus a bit more!) imagine if she didn't have a partner so ready to step in?! I would have been left with this mare no doubt whilst she went and buried her head. He said that she was wanting to look for another so that she could ride I said i thought that as far as horses go she should spend at least a year looking after this mare and get through her first winter as a horse owner and then next year re-evaluate whether or not she was cut out for it He was quite frankly shocked at how much of a novice she was (and this is her fella!!) she had led him to believe she was much more experienced and even he could tell she was terrified. So the saga continues...... |

Well at least there are some positives there - practical boyfriend for one, and the fact that this poor mare's injury has been managed in the past, not so good about the girl herself, but just maybe the resposibility will help her grow up(!?)...have to wait and see what the vet's opinion is.
Poor poor mare though, it is just so awful the way they can go from a good home to this sort of situation so quickly, it makes your heart bleed. As I said before, thank goodness she is with you to move things on rather than stuck on a patch of land somewhere with an owner who is a complete novice. If the vet's prognosis is reasonable perhaps rehoming as a companion through the ILPH or similar would be the best way to go? Fingers crossed for the best possible outcome.

Vet has visited and overall we're really positive about his thoughts but saddened even more by how much this mare has suffered.
Firstly the vet was so appalled with the state of her that he is himself going to pursue this dealer and try and get some justice which is fantastic, with a vet behind us hopefully we can get some action!
The mare had abcesses all over her mouth, she had pockets that had become infected with all the quidding and food being trapped in her teeth. The vet is also a qualified dentist so he did her teeth today and has left her with anti b's and bute as they were in such poor condition.
He has advised no more haylage because her mouth is so bad and advised for next 2 days enormous buckets of happy hoof and bran mash and ad lib ready grass.
She only has 10% movement in her bad leg but he doesn't think it is causing her pain as she has adapted because of it.
She has a grade 1 heart murmur on one side and grade 3 on the other.
He has said she can go out as of tomorrow and just to take it easy and build her up slowly, my lot are spending their first night out this year so will be very chilled tomorrow. Will introduce her quietly and hope there aren't too many fireworks! They are a very easy going bunch and none of them are aggressive so i hope they befriend her.
So positive in the fact that the vet wants to take action against this man and he didn't just want to pts. He spent over 2 hours explaining everything to her owners and they seem to have taken it all on board. They have spent all day with her today and now im dealing more with the fella he is there when he says he will be and listens to me which is so much better.

well thank god they found you! well done carol at least she has been seen by a vet and the BF is listening to some sensible advice and shes comfortable, Ive had my fill of stupid people at the moment, i know it might sound a bit harsh but i think you should have to pass a test and get a license to own a horse! i know its a bit extreme and sorry to rant, but seriously I hope the situation improves for you (fingers & toes crossed) and the mare is ok. Hi All. A friend has asked me to post the following information - hope it helps.
She suggests that someone should contact the Throughbred Breeders Association (TBA) with the registered name of the mare, in case the original breeder, or owner when she was being used as a broodmare, are part of the scheme for people to 'buy back' their horses if they fall on hard times. Having said that not sure if this scheme has yet rolled out in UK as it has in USA. There are also various specialist Thoroughbred rescue places and TBA could suggest the best ones, if this was ever needed, in this case it might be a better solution than an ILPH place. eg: Greatwood Caring for Retired Racehorses

Its so upsetting that this poor mare has been in so much pain and discomfort, but hopefully now it can be begun to put right. maybe she was meant to come to you, I hate to think what would of happened to the poor darling if she'd of ended up on some of the places that pass themselves off as livery yards. I hope that the vet can pursue this as well. Its good that at least the BF sounds sensible and is taking an interest.
Unfortunately as said previously, some people arent fit to own horses, these days its all too easy to buy any animal
At least now, she's at the start of what hopefully will be a happy outcome |

Great news about the vet wanting to do something about the dispicable dealer, and also that the poor mare is being treated - hope her mouth heals quickly, and that she enjoyed her turn out today |

Thanks guys, we would do it for any animal though we are big softies! She went out today, my arabs left her to it well Dinki had a sniff and she shook her back leg at him so he gave her a dirty look and him and Kerry wandered off together and ignored her. Mario our Dartmoor mithered her to stand still and snog him which was a funny look her a very tall skeleton and him a tubby little short arse with a million chat up lines that don't work Tilly our most dominant mare (at 12hh) has a touch of lami so she is in for a few days so didn't get to meet her. She was very inoffensive though and just wanted to have a graze and relax. She coped well with the terrain though so that was a relief, don't know how she will get on with mud in winter but for time being at least she is having the sun on her back and grass in her belly.

For now, things are looking up for this poor mare, and it's down to you Carol - so pleased that you are watching over her, but also concerned that you mustn't stress yourself in your condition.
Make sure you put yourself first and please don't be afraid to ask us lot for help if you need it. |

She's actually doing really well She's now going out into the field everyday with ours, Kerry has taken a real dislike to her but she just keeps out of her way, Dinki doesn't really bother either way and Mario is just a little flirt...think Danny DeVito of the Dartmoor variety He is total boss of the whole herd and at 11.2hh that is no mean feat!
Her feet are breaking up a bit but to be honest its all dead foot and our farrier will be back in a couple of weeks so think she will just need a tidy up. Her movement in the bad knee has improved 100%! Its quite unbelievable really, i think she must have been penned up for some time to go so stiff on it and now she is out everyday she can actually buck and gallop all around the field. She goes mad to see me when i go down even though all she gets is a pat! I think she just can't quite believe her luck. Her owners seem to have worked out a routine together and although they're so very novice since the visit from the vet they have taken everything on board and are doing well. The girl is thinking of having riding lessons from a lady at the main yard and has even been doing the mornings as well. Now mine are more or less out 24/7 its taken the stress out of me being there at 7.30am and worrying about her. The vet is pursuing the dealer too so all in all things have got so much better since she arrived, main thing being she is being looked after and thoroughly enjoying relaxing in the field and being fed |
