I'm humming and hawing over leaving K and the pony out all night as she won't tolerate a rug but it still gets quite chilly at night although only cold as opposed to wet and/or windy.
I've had another cortizone injection in my arm so forbidden from mucking out or doing anything much for a month ! I'm paying my friend to muck out at the moment but wondered if I should just leave them out as it is nearly May .
What's everyone else doing at the moment?

Mine have their doors open and can come and go as they please, although they are choosing to come in and sleep, if that is an indication |

Mine have been out for just over a week and are rugged at night as we have had some fairly sharpish frosts. They seem as happy as sandboys. |

Jack's been out unrugged during the day, and left with his stable door open at night, for about the last six weeks! (I'm a mean mummy)
He needs to loose weight, and prefers to be out.
The last week or so, he's been out in the field in the morning at breakfast time, so that to me says the weather is ok for out 24/7.
Until this morning, that is - yucky rain and sleet! |

My girl is out 24/7 all year round with constant access to field shelter. I took her rug off last week, she seems fine. You could give yours a try and see how it goes. |

Kazzy has been out 24/7 this winter and around 2 weeks ago took his lightweight rug off and he's naked now
Has had his leightweight rug on occassionally at night at first but might bput it on tonight if they are giving rain, even though he has a field shelter I will sleep better at night knowing he's covered

Thank you for your replies !
K is still a bit lean as she never winters particularly well (doesn't help that even in minus 10 she won't wear her pj's ). She was 19 years old yesterday and so not really in her first flush of youth bless her . I'm still feeding her and she has ad lib hay as well as the grass which is coming through nicely so she should start filling out soon.
I have got the option of leaving the stable open for her to go in and out but there are a few piles of tut lying around in the little yard that I'm unable to move and I would instead worry that she might go rock climbing in the night !

Oh no don't say that ! Whereabouts are you Phoenix? (praying Phoenix says Scotland ).
I don't think I've got much choice actually as my friend has just contacted me to say she's really poorly with tonsilitus and laid up in bed so she can't muck out. Really hope they will be ok tonight.

Ours have been out 24/7 for about 3 weeks now, currently naked during the day and lightweight turnouts at night, but if the weather worsened we would put the heavier rugs on at night/leave on during the day. We are still feeding twice a day while waiting for the spring grass to finally arrive, one of ours is 19 and another is 20 and they are quite happy. |

Mine are out day and night naked They are completely fine, the grass is through and I am already restricting it. If it gets wet and windy I'll put their rainsheets on. Off to check the forecast! |

My girls are out, rugged at night and fed twice a day with hay while waiting for the grass to come through. They are all quite relieved to be out, I think, after being in throughout most of this awful winter!

I usually use may as a guide line as hopefully we shouldnt get to many frost but as someone else has said its meant to get cold over night. If in doubt put them out but just put rugs on they should be fine |

Mine have been out as its been quite nice up here but they are rugged, have a shelter and my grass is coming through. However I have taken them in tonight as its a wee bit colder with snow/hailsones today. So they are all wrapped up inside. |

We moved the youngsters (Chips, yearling and Scandal, 2 year old) yesterday onto a lovely 1.5 acre sheltered paddock with loads of grass and turned them out 24/7! They had only been rugged when cold/wet during the winter and never rugged in the stable so they're out naked. We have got lightweight rain sheets for if it gets cold/wet. Chips will be gelded on Wednesday so he'll be rugged if he feels poorly.

Don't any of you worry about laminitis then? I have one, Samantha, who could be out 24/7 on any amount of lush grass because she has some TB in her, which makes her quite hard to put weight on, and isn't at all greedy, but I worry all the time about keeping my ( very greedy) purebred's weight down, and turning him out 24/7 when the spring grass is coming through would not be an option. I have had a nice relaxing winter of them being out from 8am till 6pm, but as the grass is coming , have just changed them on to my summer routine, when I turn into a human yo-yo. Out at 8am, in at 1pm or 2pmish, out again at 5pm and in again for the night at 8pm. This way they have the whole field to gallop about and play in, and a decent amount of turnout, but with a gap in the middle so there isn't a risk of too much grass getting in to the hind gut all at once. K sounds like my Samantha Jaj,so not at risk of laminitis, and way down south where you are she will be fine. |

My two have been out for a few weeks now, unrugged, but they have access not only to their stables but a much larger shelter as well, 24/7. The weather had improved enough for that, but it's since gotten chillier and I've been feeding them hay again at night. They still get two feeds a day as well, as well as having 13 acres to play in |

Jaj, your climate is pretty much the same as mine . Five of mine are turned out naked 24/7 at the moment, including my 23 year old. They are as happy as pigs in the proverbial. However, should the weather turn wet/windy and depending on the temperature, they will either be rugged and/or brought back in at night.
If you are worried about her weight just keep feeding or upping her normal diet whilst she's turned out (gotta be easier than mucking out ) |

Oooh Heather I worry all the time about laminitis and K is in a fenced off bit within the field and the pony is in a fenced off bit within the fenced off bit within the field ! I move the pony onto the bits that K has grazed down and only move the main bit a little strip by little strip. It is quite rough grazing too and has had sheep on it for quite a while so no swards of lush grass for us.
My closet friend's mare is literally at the last chance saloon with lami and so I'm painfully aware of how awful the condition can be .

Zan, I have the same issues and having a good doer means that I never leave her out 24/7. She will be out for a few hours to start off with and then gradually built up to 8-9 hours. She is exercised every day and fed a magnesium supplement. I'm on livery so strip grazing isn't an option. Luckily my mare doesn't mind being in over night. |

I have laminitis (with my welsh girl) and L.V to worry about (i'm good at worrying!) Fortunatly, the 2 can be managed in a simalar way. The 2 with L.V come into stables at 6am, the other 2 (the welsh mountain and my older loan gelding) come onto the yard with them and they all have ad lib hay. that way the girls are out of the sun, and the lami pony is off the grass for half the day (the gelding has to follow along, not that he seems to mind!). At about 6pm they all go out ( the 2 L.V girls with protective bandages if it's still sunny) and the welsh girl has her muzzle on. None are rugged except the gelding with his sweet itch rug on, however if the weather reports are correct, we may be wearing at least light weights by this time next week! I have to say, they all seem very happy with this routine and all come galloping in first thing, eat their breakfasts and go to sleep! Ros |

Yes Zan - Laminitis a constant worry (although mine have never had it) they are on a very small section of the field (half acre tops) and come in regularly (not due to the weather) just to keep them off the grass. They are far better off 'a bit chilly' and picking at sparce grazing, than wrapped up and stuffed with hay. |
