OK, i'm probably going to sound a total amatuer here, so humour me!

I have my first show of the season with Gus in a month (hes rising 3). Now he is still pretty hairy and showing no signs of casting his coat - do i clip? I dont want to ruin his coat, but i dont really want to take a hairy yak into the ring

Ours were clipped out in December & early January.
Not keen on clipping after January as not sure how it affects the summer coat?
I think I remember a thread on here before where some people clipped a grey just days before a show, & other colours about 3 weeks before a show.
See what other ALiners have to say?

I would clip and have clipped one of our yearling fillies all ready ...but i would always say give a bay/chestnut 3 weeks if not longer to let the coat grow back..but that's just me!!(we all differ!) Greys i would say a week before is fine (two days before is a bit of a risk if clippers play up or something!! lol)... our filly is grey and I'm giving her at least 4 weeks! On the other hand their is nothing wrong with showing them as they are i know i would be hanging on to my coat with all this cold weather!!!

I find clipping them after end of jan wrecks summer coat and chesnuts go a disgusting colour, always bodyclip my greys 3 weeks bfore show and hot oil them but i would just groom, groom and more than groom,he will be ready in time for important shows.I clipped my filly in jan and i think she is still going to have a horrible summer coat not the usual skin my girls have with strapping and grooming.

It depends on his colour... if he isn't gray, I wouldn't clip as its too late to get a nice colour... if he is, the I would get the clippers out.

I know this can affect the summer coat... but then again, most gray in hand horses i know get clipped all year... if it has a different colour grooming and at least a weekly bath should be good enough... if that isn't enough then you shouldn't clip any closer then 6-8 weeks before the show.

I bought a FURminator for horses on Ebay, and it has done wonders on my horses, getting all the loose hairs off their coats... perhaps this could help you...

I've clipped my grey two weeks before a show and she's always had a fabulous summer coat. I always give them a bath first to get rid of any dirt in the coat. Just make sure you rug well afterwards so that you get a nice even coat growth and no long hairs grow back.

I always try and spend as much time as i can though from January onwards trying to shed out as much of the winter coat as i can with a shedding blade even if i'm clipping as it means there's less hair for the clippers to go through. Also there is nothing like good grooming/strapping to improve skin and coat.
