Hi,

I'm getting so confused about what we can and can't tow! My boyfriend tows my trailer, and he has a tractor license which allows him to tow with a tractor, but only passed his test a few years ago, would this count to tow a trailer with a car?

We have a 3door Rav4 and an old Rice trailer, and my horse weighs around 450kg. None of this adds up to 3500kg which is the maximum without a license, but I don't understand the idea of the total weight of trailer and horse not weighing more than the vehicle, how do I find out what my vehicle and trailer weighs? The web seems to say my little 4x4 weighs 1700kg which I just can't believe?

Any ideas anybody?

If you look at the photocard part of your driving license, it will tell you what you can drive/tow.

What year is your Rav4 and what engine size? - as both make a difference to what weight it can tow.

For instance a 2005 2.0l Rav4 has a max towing weight of 1500kg. However it is recommended for safety that you don't exceed 80% of the maz towing weight. But legally as long as you don't exceed the max towing weight of 1500kg you're okay. That's the weight of your trailer plus horse and any equipment in the trailer. This is all provided you have the correct licence. I'm not familiar with the tractor licence but to tow legally if you passed your test after 1997 you need the letters C+D or C+E on your driving licence.

it is a 1998 2.0l petrol engine and I can't find the accurate towing weight as different sites say anything from 680 - 1900kg!

The weight you used to be able to tow was based on the kerb weight of your vehicle, meaning that the total you could tow (horse+trailer)was the same weight as your vehicle, I am not sur eif it has changed but I don't think so
