We have decided to put Breagh our yellow dun highland/arab mare in foal in May.
My daughter is riding my youngster Stazi now,because she is too big for Happy!
My other youngster Iana will be started in the Spring and my son who is going to train to be a farrier wants to ride her.So that leaves poor Breagh, with no one to ride her,we all love her and would never part with her,although I have had 2 people keen to buy her as a bombproof first pony.
She had had three foals before she was broken to ride and is a great mum,it would be ideal to get a foal that will make 15+hhs and be big enough for Steve,Rosie wants it to be a palamino or buckskin 
I want it too look araby and be sweet natured.
I have a stallion in mind and I have contacted the owner and spoken to my vet,but I just wondered what you all think,Breagh is the driving pony in my pics,,,sorry for the long post!

I am not very good at the genetic colour thing,but I was thinking of a cremello/palimino stallion to get a buckskin foal.
Not sure how strong the dilute gene is |

| She is lovely! She looks BayDun so if you breed her to a Cremello you will get either a Buckskin(Bay+Cream) or Palomino(Chestnut+Cream) with his double dilute cream gene and also have a chance of your mare passing on her dun dilute gene and getting a Dunskin (Dun and Buckskin) or Dunalino (Dun and Palomino)if she carries Chestnut. To have a better chance of Buckskin or DunSkin you could use a Perlino stallion which is double dilute BayCream. I have a Baydun mare who last year had a Baydun leopard spotted colt by my bay fewspot Appaloosa stallion. |

| Have a look at http://www.equine-color.info/node/9, this will take you straight to the dilutes. My one stallion carries single dilute gene for dun, he is going up to Leicester for the covering season, if you are interested, trouble is foal will probably have spots too!!! |

Thanks for the replies never thought of appaloosas,had a look at the whirlwind horses website,,lovely spotty babies!
I believe from reading the equine-colour info that the yellow dun is a strong gene,especially when the mare has a dorsal stripe and zebra stripes on her legs,as Breagh has.I wonder therefore if put to a chestnut or grey stallion would you still have a high chance of a buckskin or dun foal.I wonder if the grey gene would be more dominant than the dun?

If you breed her to a chestnut you would have a 50% chance of Dun and then it will depend on whether your mare carries chestnut as to whether you might get a chestnut or bay. You won't get Buckskin because Dun dilute is different to Buckskin which is cream dilute. Using a grey sire it will again depend on what colour he was born, but you have 50% chance of the foal turning grey. Grey is a fading gene rather than a colour. Dun does seem a strong gene, i used to have a RedDun near leopard appaloosa stallion and 50% of his offspring came out Dun compared to hardly any spotted! He is the sire of my BayDun mare. |
