Hurrah for Dermisol certainly!! Yesterdays change I think I even saw some new black skin on the inside. The edge of the cut now looks as though it is level with the edge of the front of the cannon bone (does that make any sense at all??!) basically it is just on the front rather than reaching round to the back.
Thank you for all of your support, amazing how much different it feels to be able to discuss it with someone other than OH! and as we have been going through this since oct we have kind of worn the subject out. Hard to bolster each other up sometimes, but the advice from AL has given us both our second wind and we are feeling much more positive |

Thanks for your thoughts but I am afraid it has all gone wrong again
When we changed the dressing on thurs the new skin was starting to break down and proud flesh was developing through the gappy hole. We have re-dressed it and yesterday she went to a friend's stud in Devon where they have a really good vet. He came out and looked at her yesterday afternoon and he was surprised the wound was as bad as it is after such a long time from the orginal injury. He is using an astringent poultice to cut it back before trying to heal it *again*
I cannot tell you how disapointed I am that we are once again back at the beginning and I am starting to wonder if this relatively small injury will actually kill her, just because it won't heal. There are only so many times that the healing process will re-start and I really fear we are getting to the point where it won't.
As for manuka honey, she had that on when she first cut it and had it on again after the first lot of proud flesh was cut back. We continued with it for about 2 weeks, but I feel that that encouraged the proud flesh. I know that other people have had sucess with it though, so thank you for mentioning it.
Here she is before going yesterday
You might just about be able to see where she injured her withers and the hair is growing back. Her nose was fractured just about where her headcollar is and her right eye scocke is still a bit enlarged from being injured as well. She has lost her nice straight profile as her nose is a bit lumpy now! The right hand 'corner' of her lip was completely off but you can only see the scar on the inside, and it has grown back better than I ever thought it would. It will be so sad if the last little thing ends it all. |

Very sorry to hear it's gone back a step, how soul-destroying. It WILL heal eventually. She's done incredibly well to get to where she has and this last step will take a bit longer. Is she on any sort of booster/ tonic to help her circulation and immune system? Might be worth a go if not. She's taken such a pounding. So have you! so remember to look after yourself too x
Quick edit, just remembered something - have PM'd you. |

Been following this story, but not felt able to add anything constructive, as mercifully none of the injuries my lot have had haven't been anywhere near as bad. The only thing I don't *think* has been mentioned is aloe vera gel, but I don't know if that would help at all???
PS Jamana is fine and happy and has learnt to take off her under-rug!

Yep. both Fuciderm and Synalar-N used on Buffy to advantage for proud flesh after dressings came off. |

I personally don't like having proud flesh cut off - I have successfully used copper sulphate crystals (which only target proud flesh and not healthy tissue).
Its old-fashioned but it works and I know Rhoni uses it too.
I hope you get this injury sorted soon. Caryn |

OMG, I am replying to Angelo here. Was just looking through and noticed your post. My mare has exactly the same injusy as this. She did it in May last year and it is still not healed.
My mare was chased through the fencing by another horse and cut her flesh off the leg down to the bone. She had cuts all over her body and a big flap of flesh hanging down. Hers was strapped up for months as the vets wanted it to heal from the outside in. When dressings were taken off it would swell and crack open again. At this point the wound was very small. The vet said I needed to leave bandages off to let the area strengthen up again. She has had a go at it several times and set it back a fair bit. My farrier came up with a suggestion of putting lard round the area to stop her going near it, which seems to be working!! If I could upload photos from my phone I would do as it was very like yours and in the same place. I only have pics from a few weeks ago as had a different phone when the accident happened. Hope yours heals soon.

Thanks for your replies.
I have spoken to my friends today, she is happy and they say that the leg is looking slightly less proud today when they changed the dressing. Whether they are just telling me that to cheer me up I don't know Her leg is a little swollen and she is on Bute to help that. But she is eatng everything and is quite happy Vet is coming tue/weds to check progress and perhaps (with any luck) can use some 'magic cream' he has to kick-start healing, for about the 45th time!
She was having Fuciderm, and whilst it held the PF at bay it wasn't allowing new skin to grow. We did use it to great success on a very badly injured mare last year (again caused by deer. Vension for Xmas 2010 I think ) I really think these things are a case of 'horses for courses' which I why I am grateful for any idea you have to see if that might be the thing for this mare.
Jo, I hope your mare mare continues to make progress
Keren, PS Jamana is fine and happy and has learnt to take off her under-rug!
Keren Why doesn't that surpise me! Jamana would never think of behaving in such a way to injure herself like this other thing! Why did I give up Arabs for TB's??????? Give her a big kiss from me |

Back in 2002 my gelding did a horrendous injury (panic attack - after a wasp sting we think) in the horsebox - it was very bad - his cannon was exposed and i honestly thought the vet would pts.
I have got step by step photos through the whole healing process - but i cant put my finger on them at the moment, but here is one (about 9 weeks after the accident) - he spend the first 6 weeks at Leahurst
His proud flesh was chopped back every 10 days, and his dressings changed every 5days for about 5 months
It took a long time to heal, about 8 months till he was able to have the dressings off.
Once it was scabbed i used Aloe vera twice a day, going through 2 tubes a week, and even used a laser pen for a final stubborn bit over his hock that refused to heal.
So - yes sometimes they do take a long time - but you can get there with patience.
He does still have a scar, but it is perfectly flat, doesn't give him any trouble - he is 200% sound.
and is successfully shown!
Don't give up hope! |

One of my mares ripped her near hind leg on the cannon from the hock down. She ripped it down to the membrane over the bone! It was the length of my hand and round both sides. Vet when he came didnt realize when I phoned that it was so bad and basically thought I was perhaps exagerating until he arrived and saw it for himself, he gasped gasped "this will take months to heal". He had to cut off all the skin etc., because it had died by the time he arrived. He left me with things to put on and bandage every day. Cant remember what I had to use, but I decided to use Forever Living Aloe Vera Veterinary Spray and their Aloe Vera Gelly. I sprayed the dressing with the Aloe Vera Veterinary Spray and then spread the Aloe Vera Gelly onto the bandage and then put it onto her wound. I did this daily and probably used more than I should as I would soak the dressing before putting on the AV gelly.
The vet had to come out 5 weeks later to deal with an old rescue mare I had. I left the injured mare's leg bare so that he could see it also. He arrived and said as we were walking towards the stables " I've been expecting you to phone to cut off proud flesh" then he saw the mare's leg and exclaimed "you don't need a vet, what have you been using? I told you it would take months to look like this". My vet now stocks Forever Living Aloe Vera Veterinary Spray, Aloe Vera Gelly, Aloe Propolis Creme and their toothpaste!
Twice when I put the mare out she was bucking and hooting around with her pal so much that the bandage slipped and some mud got onto the wound, so I cleaned it, then did the usual with the Aloe products but added Manuka Honey also. Next day one very clean and healthy wound. I also used FL Aloe Propolis Creme.
I have photos on my old pc but cant connect it up. I'm sure I sent photos to Helen Gough who also uses Forever Living Aloe Products. Personally, I'm pretty sure your wound would have healed much quicker if you had used Aloe Vera.
They have a wonderful veterinary book which can be bought from Amazon. It shows many examples of injuries and other conditions and also has symbols which say which animals to use for and includes humans also. |

Latest update from the new vet is that it is looking good and starting to heal, again. Also it is drying up a bit which it has taken ages to do before so hopefully that is positive. He has ordered some cream from Holland to put on this week to get the new skin moving.
OH is going up to see her and the vet tomorrow and I had told him to take pics for me to see. I have shown him how to use the camera so no excuses!!
Still very much keeping our fingers crossed and also hoping she can still go to Ireland early next week. That will be the third in the set of vet bills covering two countries and three counties! ( Vet bill fromt the new vet came on friday but somehow got overlooked and put with the junk mail to be burnt, OH woke me up at 1am to tell me how much it was for one week!) |

Thought I would update this thread.
Scarlet (or Scar-leg as she is now referred to!!) went to Ireland on the 17 Feb and I haven't set eyes on her since, but I am told the LEG HAS HEALED and I think they are turning her out now. I bet she is thrilled.
But, best of all I have just had an e-mail telling me she is IN FOAL!! She had not cycled at all until she was finally ready to cover on 16 March, and after only 1 covering has gone in foal. I cannot believe it and I am so pleased. Not to mention relieved as at e30/day she is costing an arm and a leg on keep and I haven't seen a vet bill from them yet
My other TB mare who foaled in Jan has been home back in foal for nearly a month!
So all being well we should have a foal next March by this man

Hi Jamana,
I know this is too late to help your mare now butW we have found a product by the name of CutHeal to be very good especially where proud flesh is concerned. It comes in either a powder or gell form. The powder has a lovely lemon smell to it when you puff it on and the idea is to leave it on for 24 hours it forms a crust over the wound which stops the flys and drys up the exposed part of the wound as healing comes from underneath. After 24 hours wash it off and reapply and this is what helps to remove the proud flesh.
We were originally put onto it by a show judge.
Glad to hear that she is in foal |
