Apologies in advance for the long post & pic overload!!

I hope to get Pearl out and about a bit this year - not having shown Arabs before (only Welsh one's) I could do with some input!!
Pearl has only been to one show - well subscibed local show - where she won the Arab/Anglo/Part Bred class under a Hunter judge who doesn't "do" Arabs so I was happy..... but will I be throwing money away if I show her at County/Agricultural shows?

I appreciate that she is not "exotic" - she is not overly dished nor has she a straight profile but she moves like a dream - a real powerhouse, has lovely tail carriage and is, I believe, reasonably well put together.

(not the most attractive pic but shows her legs)

We have no huge aspirations and I know that she is not going to do well in Arab shows but......

Thank You!!

I think she is lovely...plus at the end of the day as long as you enjoy taking her to shows what does someones else opinion matter...at the end of the show you will allways be taking the best horse home with you.

i think she is very pretty and if i were you i would take her out and show her off!

Not all judges like the exotic dished look! And i think as long as you both enjoy your shows, then dont let anything stop you!!!

There's a lot to say for the experience of getting out and about, never mind doing "fancy" things in classes with a load of other similar horses! Pearl is gorgeous, and she looks happy and attentive in those show photos which goes a long way for her general character. She's of the build that would look terrific under saddle. How old is she?

She is lovely girl, not every judge will like the same thing and your girl is a nice stamp of a mare! Just go and have fun ...I am always happy taking my horses home with me first or last!
Is she ridden? as i feel she would make a lovely ridden mare...just an idea!!!

Good luck and have fun showing her off!

Thanks for your comments!
I have shown the Welsh one's for years and know what the judges look for/like but Arabs are new to me - hence the question. I am happy to take her home at the end of the day - it is not about winning but equally I don't want to take her out if she is not "good" enough!

Nerusa: she is 6, not ridden at present. She is a late starter - I brought her as an unhandled 41/2 year old so we have taken things slow and steady so far.

Ziadomira: we are in Derby - are you near?

Timbercroft: Hope to get her under saddle this year!

I agree with Timbercroft. Show her under saddle when you are ready. If you have doubts about some judges not liking her you can treat in hand showing as training for the ridden classes. Personally I think she looks lovely, you wouldn't be throwing money away if you enjoy showing.
Good Luck

I agree take her out only if you are going to enjoy the show, dont worry about what others think , I also feel she would make an awesome ridden mare

I agree with much of the above. I'd say put your resources into backing her and getting her a nicely schooled, mannerly ride. Local shows are fantastic to get experience, both in hand and under saddle. County shows are usually costly. My own experience suggests this kind of Arab does better as a ridden horse. She looks a great type who will be a fabulous all-rounder. The Arab in-hand world, outside the village show scene, is very different.

She is fab looking, the lady i used 2 work 4 showed her arabs in hand and yours looks more araby than her's i think if you went under the right judge you could do very well, it's also a great expierence! As i found out!

If you liked showing then go for it. The County/Agricultural shows are often poorly supported so would be great if you supported them, I think many owners think too much about showing at this level - if you enjoy it, then I say go for it. Would be great to hear about your success later in the year

I have always enjoyed showing the Welsh ponies and we do OK at County level, I would not take her out unless we both enjoyed it - life is too short to stress over what should be fun. County shows are undersubscribed and deserve support - plenty within easy travelling distance for us to have a shot at. Pearl will be under saddle this year but will not go out ridden as I do not have a rider for her at the moment. We will go and do our bit at local and County level and fly the flagRoll on spring.

if you are a lil unsure about showing her against the big flashy mares!(not saying yours isnt lovely) as a start why not consider showing her in amature home produced i did compete in some when i 1st started showing as at the age of 15 it was hard to compete against the professionals! as some times its not all about the horse it some times comes down to who is handling the horse!! not saying all times but i have seen it!! as long as you wouldnt change your horse, got there safely got home safely, and was happy the way your horse behaved then i would class it as a good day with or without a rossette!!!!

You have worked so hard with this mare, and it's paid off big time, she is stunning and i can see her doing really well ridden, i have done two seasons with Baz hopefully 2010 too in hand but my aim is for ridden, I LOVE the amature classes they are so much fun and relaxed i have learnt so much and if you wanted to have a seriously fab time, aim for Qualifying for BAHPAC!! Hope to see you about soon xx Angel and Baz

Angel - Thank You - not the same scruffy little toerag you saw at South View!!

No offence to anyone but I dislike the hype that goes with Arab shows (and Welsh Cob classes) - I feel that the noise and commotion is unnecessary hence why I prefer the more sedate Crabbet style classes and County rings - it never bothers me if we get a ribbon or not.

I accept that it is down to the judge on the day. We may have to go for the Home Produced classes - whatever we do it will be fun if for no other reason than running round like a headless chicken from Welsh classes to Arab classes - might even loose a few pounds

I think she's very pretty. And like you said, showing should be fun.
This will be my first year (hopefully) showing arabs too.
Although mine is 11, he has never been shown before. But I think he's very pretty, as I'm sure you do with your beautiful girl.

I'm just looking at doing a couple of small local shows I know that have arab classes in them, and take it from there. If he does well, great, if not, it doesn't matter. It will still be worth it.

Get out there with her and enjoy it. :)
