I have researched various joint supplements and found the one which works for my boy, but thought I would share my findings with you as there are lots of posts flying about asking which the best one is
I tried to use the same on-line site for cost (so not necessarily the cheapest) and worked out the cost per month for an average sized horse (500Kg or less) based on the maintenance level. Obviously during the loading period and for larger horses, the cost will be more!
First off, vet administered and most highly rated (on equine forums):
Cosequin (generally accepted as the gold standard): Glucosamine Hydrochloride 1800mg Manganese 16mg Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 600mg Cost (700g tub) £88.66 Cost/month: £25.09
Equistro Flexadin (comparable to Cosequin) Glucosamine Hydrochloride 1800mg Harpagophytum (Devils Claw) 300mg Manganese 16mg Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 600mg Cost (1050g tub) £80.64 Cost/month: £23.04
Synequin Ascorbic Acid 570mg Glucosamine Hydrochloride 5000mg N. Acetyl D. Glucosamine 500mg Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 2000mg Zinc Sulphate 360mg Cost (1Kg tub) £127.80 Cost/month: £38.34
Suppleaze Gold (compares itself to Synequin on website) Glucosamine Hydrochloride 5500mg HA (Hyaluronic Acid) 40mg MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) 2460mg Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 2000mg Cost (600g tub) £45.95 Cost/month: £6.89
Newmarket Joint Supplement Glucosamine Hydrochloride 10000mg Cost (1.5Kg tub) £79.76 Cost/month: £15.95
And then I took a look at some of the more popular off-the-shelf products:
Fixe Star Superflex Glucosamine Hydrochloride 4610mg Glutamine 1200mg MSM 4300mg Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 175mg Cost (800g tub) £32.99 Cost/month: £16.49
Extraflex HA Abscorbate 348mg Glucosamine Hydrochloride 12.5g Glucoronic Acid 75mg Glutamic Acid 45mg Glutamine 145mg Glycine 145mg Hyaluronic Acid (HA) 75mg Manganese 52mg MSM 10g Omega 3 ALA 4560mg Proline 45mg Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 1000mg Cost (1.8Kg tub) £48.90 Cost/month: £24.45
Cortaflex Glucoronic Acid 50mg Glutamic Acid 30mg Glutamine 100mg Glycine 100mg Hyaluronic Acid (HA) 57.2mg Manganese 28.5mg Proline 31mg Cost (908g tub) £52.26 Cost/month: £13.44
Cortaflex HA Glucoronic Acid 150mg Glutamic Acid 100mg Glutamine 200mg Glycine 264mg Hyaluronic Acid (HA) 57.2mg Manganese 28.5mg Proline 190mg Cost (908g tub) £69.34 Cost/month: £17.33
I will let you draw your own conclusions
