our 16h black and white mare is not right. About four days ago she started to go off her feed, eating her haylage but not interested in hard feed at all so thought sommit she didn't like so took things off ect. eating it bit better than she was but shes just eating less and less haylage, pleny of gut sound, dungs a little soft but plenty of it, shes a little dull but seems bright. tard owner been keeping an eye to her, shes not loosing condition, im not sure but im thinking shes been kicked to the ribs so wondering if shes in pain, shes not lame or showing any discomfort. tommorrow shes were gonna give her a little kaolin to help firm her droppings up and see if she perks up. do you think i should give her some bute incase it is pain, and also thought of worming her she was last wormed 7 weks ago, and well wormed before hand.

How old is she? We've had problems with our 26 yo going off her haylage and also a bit(!) sloppy when moving from grass to haylage. We've added a good 15 ml of limestone flour to her twice-daily buckets, and it has made a magical difference.
We have also withdrawn the limestone flour for a short period to check that it was what was making the difference, and - oh dear.

| oould be any sort of virus if she's just a bit off but no real symptoms of ill health. if she doesn't pick up may be worth having a blood test done. wouldn't advise bute if you don't know if she's in pain as could mask important symptoms! |

If she hasn't been right for 4 days, then I would suggest getting the Vet out. It could be absolutely anything.......I certainly wouldn't advise giving her bute without knowing what was wrong.
Hope the vet can give you answers. |

Most of our yard are dropping like flies at the mo 
Had three different vets out and they seem to think its a bacteria virus going around. Symptons are going off their hay, and hard feed although some are picking at the grass (for what its worth!) loose droppings and temperature. They seem to be off colour for about 3-4 days, generally down in the dumps. A few are eating sugar beet and a little haylage but they seem to have sore throats too.
Don't think its just our yard as have heard there is alot of different viruses going round at this time of year. They said best way to treat is to just give some bute unless temperature is sky high and they may possibly need a bute injection.
Hope she gets better soon.

| I agree with pintoarabian, could be something to do with her teeth or mouth. Is she running a temperature? There are a lot of viruses about at the moment but usually if they go off their food because of a virus they are quite poorly! high temp and listlessness. Best of luck. i do hope she improves soon.x |
