He's probably got a mud rash infection and maybe some chapping because of the awfully cold weather we've been having. My mare has suffered terribly this year. Is he stabled? I would advise washing with warm water and a very mild cleanser or hibiscrub (although im not a fan of this as ive had some bad reactions) Then once clean and dry i would smother in sudocrem and then keep as dry as you can. If there are scabs the sudocrem will soften them and it will be easier to rub them off tomorrow without hurting him. You need to act quickly though as with this weather it can get inflammed and sore and then lead to more serious infections like cellulosis (sp?) Hope this helps, im sure others will be able to offer advice too! Carol |

My old boy had mud fever for the first time in his life this year, just on one leg. I squirted MTG directly onto it out of the bottle every other day for a week and you wouldn't think he'd ever had a problem. Wish I'd taken before and after photos to show the difference. The stuff is brilliant! |

If you still think it is mites try denes mite cream (it is better than the powder) although there is a good chance that it is just a very bad case of mud fever. |
