Following on from the thread about the AHS Premium Scheme..where most of the emphasis appears to be placed on Stallions, and with the 2010 Breeding Season soon to be upon us......it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to AHS Premium Mares /or Premium Eligible Mares and their performances and those of their successful offspring.

I would like to write an article for the next AHS Magazine to help promote our wonderful Premium Brood Mares or mares who are eligible for Premium status but not yet applied for same

Will start the ball rolling with our own Queen, Karitzi (AASB) Musketeer/Tara Cara, now 27 years, and still very well. Karitzi earned Premium Status through her own huge achievements In-Hand and as a brood mare. She is the dam of eleven foals, three of which were retained as stallions (2-Anglos and one Part Bred) who have ALL proved themselves, through their own ridden Progeny.

The only two of her progeny who went to the Nationals, both gained BNC awards. We retained Karitzi`s last colt Sunray Saristocrat (AASB) sired by the late Somerset Morn (AASB) Saristocrat has never been shown...but is an outstanding stallion with excellent conformation wonderful limbs and powerful off the ground paces. He is proving a very good stockgetter, and progeny already British National Champions.
Feel sure he too, will gain Premium status, once his offspring are under saddle and performing.

There must be many Brood Mares out there who have produced top class performance stock...but remain unrecognised....please tell us about them

My Anglo mare Naomi Nurha is a premium mare through her achievements. She is 21yrs old next year and still successfully competing under saddle, although often not even acknowledged even the write ups!

Her 3 yr old filly by the successful TB stallion Infantry is yet unshown but hopefully will follow in her mothers footsteps.

I have Bint Zaehaebi, pure bred arab, (Autumn Royal x Richelle) Premium mare through performance in endurance. Her eldest (filly by Vert Olive) is 3 and her second (gelding by Chatanz) is 2.

I haven't applied for Premium status for my non-arab (TBx) mare Caveland Calypso although I think that her Sports Horse (GB) grading gained as a 4yo would qualify her? She is unridden due to an injury sustained as a foal. Her eldest (by connemara Whitwell Senator) is starting endurance, her second (by connemara Arrow Javelin) is a much loved "hacker", her third (by Dutch Warmblood Ramexico) is starting competition next year, her fourth (by Marcus Aurelius) is 3, her fifth (yearling by Marcus Aurelius) you have met at BNFOYS(!)and her sixth (by Marcus Aurelius) has recently been weaned. Her yearling also graded at BEF this year in endurance and eventing.

The plan is for the current 3 year olds from both mares to be out and about as 4 year olds next year. They weren't shown in hand as it wasn't what I wanted for the pure-bred filly (who doesn't qualify for Crabbet classes) and the gelding has stuck his legs into far too many places they don't belong! (I did post some pictures a while ago of him jumping xc on the lunge though)

As everyone knows we have the wonderful "Brox Lady Arabella" she gained her premium when she became one of only two AA mares in the country to grade into the TBF.

She has never been shown as her elderly breeder didn't show her, and when we bought her as an unbroken 8 yr old we had missed the boat!

Her first foal by the international show jumper "Tornado" will be three in the spring and he will be aimed at eventing.

Her yearling AA filly by "Fairlyn Gemini" will be shown in hand before all fingers crossed having a dressage career,She is as yet unshown. But carries full pink trakehner papers.

This years foal won a first premium at the BEF won her class at the trakehner show and was res champ. She is by the premium stallion "Romarnic Ranger". She will be shown in hand next year.

The foal she is carrying will be by "Fairlyn Gemini" and cross your bits for an AA colt.

We have another premium mare with us that belongs to Douglas who rides Ranger.

"First love" is a 17hh brown mare by the wonderful stallion "Florestan" she was a premium mare out in Germany before being imported as a dressage horse.
She trained to PSG and was selected for the "world class potential programme". She was second in the international dressage horse finals as a five year old and has a very impressive BD sheet.

She is in foal to "Ranger" and we are hopeful that she will produce a pot top class dressage horse.

She evented last year and had the most enormous jump.

She gained her premium from her performance as a dressage horse.

I think this is a really good idea

Our foundation mare won three premiums in the days of the Broodmare Premium Scheme, and her children and grandchildren have gone on to do great things.

Garnet and April are both Premium mares but as they have not had the opportunity to breed they are probably not of interest in this context. I have written to the people who bought April from Carly but have had no reply as yet - will keep you posted if I hear anything.

If we have the opportunity ( ie enough info from you guys ) then showing all the premium mares over the years who they are/were related, what they did or their progeny did etc etc we can build an invaluable reference for others looking to breed, research and learn.

Thanks admin.

I always thought this was the way to go - and my mares were tested under saddle before breeding & awarded premium status.

BUT that didn't seem to give them any favours as the financial perks were always given to the stallions.

I've forgotten how many times I stood up at AGM's and questioned that??

Still don't think mares get any recognition- other society's give the premium to the mare not the stallion.

So yes, a bit late in the day for my girls - but they went on to produce some lovely competitive offspring competing in many different disciplines - just heard that a grandson was the top endurance horse in Ireland this year!

The only award to stallions is a one off payment after they have achieved the National Stallion Performance Test. Mares on the other hand receive a Premium payment when put to a Premium Scheme Stallion on the registration of the off spring. This payment is not applicable to Stallion owners covering their own Mares.
The Premium Scheme has always tried to promote any stock by Premium Mares or Stallions, the major problem has been lack of information, but it looks as though this may well be rectified with the help of AL.

Thanks Babs and Libby

The beautiful and talented Taragun (Shogun x Taretta), 100% Old English, was granted her Premium on her own merits in the eventing world.

So far, we haven't tried to breed from her because she and Evie have been having so much fun. But that is all due to change - and her first foal (God willing) will be an Anglo!!!!!

We have at least three mares that I believe to be eligible, all First Premium Graded with Scottish Sports Horse. The first is a palomino mare, Kahlua Moonbeam, (Kennox Zalsun x Sirocco Masquerade by the AHS Premium Stallion, Crown Court.) She was also awarded Ster Status (only First Premium horses qualify to be assessed for Ster). Another palomino mare, Malibu Surfbreaker (Kennox Zalsun x Mistral Whisper, also by the AHS Premium Stallion, Crown Court, was also awarded a First Premium and Ster Status. Her dam, Mistral Whisper, also produced our Anglo stallion, Whispering Chinook by Accondy. Whispering Chinook is also First Premium graded. Malibu Surfbreaker produced Ruby Shy, by Puzzled Limited Edition, who also was awarded a First Premium and has begun a very successful career in show jumping. Malibu Surfbreaker is also the dam of Incandescent Flame, by TP Starbuck, multi champion in hand and graded, dual purpose, as a stallion with CHAPS(UK), for showing and jumping. I am sure that if I sat down and thought about it, there will be others that are eligible, either from their own performances or from that of their progeny.

So will 2010 be the year for of the Arabian Sport Horse, I sincerely hope so, IMO the AHS need us to show that there is another side to the Society, those with Performance Stock who are steadfast to their Arabian bloodlines and who don't get the press they deserve.
We have some awsome bloodlines between us and there is 'nt any thing we can't achieve, if we work together.

Let's hear it for the performance Arab in 2010 - whatever the mix of blood (Pure, Anglo or Part) and whatever the gender (stallion, mare or gelding)

WE KNOW WE CAN DO IT. THE REST OF THE HORSE WORLD KNOWS (AND DREADS ) THAT WE CAN DO IT. ALL IT NEEDS NOW IS THE ARAB WORLD TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE - WE ARE THERE, WE CAN DO IT AND WE AREN'T GOING TO STOP FLYING THE FLAG!!!!!!!!!!!

This is brilliant news from everyone.

Denmoor is right. As premium stallion owners we only get one payment from the AHS when premium status is achieved. Mare owners get a payment upon registration of there foals. But as the proud owners of both premium stallions and mares we are not eligable for that payment.

Now we just need the AHS to listen and take note.

We all have the same goal, to bring to the fore our arab, AA and PBA horses .To show the world the worth of there blood.

Keep the flag flying in 2010
