Yesterday was the day - I had arranged with Karen to collect my gorgeous colt foal Alkara Cassino (Chips). My friend Gill and I set off in plenty of time (planning to get Chips home before dark). We arrived at Karen's before midday.....and 4 of us spent over 3 hours(!!!) loading my little darling. He was not frightened, he just didn't understand why he should step onto a ramp . We had got to the point of considering contacting a Transporter and/or mild sedation when suddenly there he was on the ramp so we bundled him in.
He travelled quietly and unloaded calmly at my yard (pitch black by now) and walked into the stables and tucked into his haynet. He had cleared up his feed by morning and eaten a good-sized leaf of hay.
The plan was to turn him out with my friend Sam's retired purebred gelding, Red Gauntlet, and then introduce her yearling gelding AV Scandalous when they had settled. Chips led the way confidently into the paddock, we walked all around the fence line and then I turned him loose - all quiet - so we turned Red loose too. A few minutes galloping around with no anomosity, but Red kept going back to the gate to call for Scandal so he was also turned out....at which point Red turned nasty - charging at Chips with teeth bared, he really meant it! He chased poor Chips through an electric fence (not a mark on him, luckily) so Sam quickly caught Red, I went over to catch Chips at the same time and he whickered to me, bless him.
Red was stabled for a time whilst we erected a fence on 1/4 of the paddock where Red will now be staying for a week or so until he gets over his bond with Scandal. I know that two horses together can be a pain but I really didn't expect Red to behave like that to a baby.
Anyway, no harm done and my little boy hasn't put a hoof wrong since his arrival. He has a considerable fan club already - all the other liveries love that he is so friendly and sweet (not colty/nippy) and he just loves cuddles!
Here are a couple of pictures I took today (I won't bore you with too many but Karen will be getting the latest instalment on a CD in the post when I return her headcollar). The first is with Red Gauntlet before he got banished and the other is with AV Scandalous who is 13 months older than Chips but only about 3 inches taller!
I'm going to have so much fun with this little man!

Lovely photos - as Chips' "first" mummy (who I'm sure he's forgotten about already with Caryn's devotion to the massive Munchkin!) I'm so happy that he's got such a lovely home. I would have bet a pay cheque that he'd walk straight into the trailer as he's never argued anything, is the sweetest foal I've ever known, and doesn't have a panic button. He just said "No thankyou please" which was cute for about 10 minutes
I wish you both the best of luck in everything you do, this kind of sale reminds a (novice) breeder why they do it - the combination of Caryn and Chips is perfect .
When he finally decided to leave home and was pulling out of the drive, I said to Caryn, who was still smiling, that she'd passed the "Patience Test" and now she could have him
Oh, and Scandal is a babe |

Thanks for all your lovely comments. Chips really is as sweet as Karen says - an absolute darling (apart from the fact that I only find 1/4 bucket of dung every day - it must all be buried very well in his thick woodchip bed)! I'm already adding Simple System feed to his usual diet, which he eats with relish, and will fully change within a couple of weeks.
I could go on and on......
You've all twisted my arm, here are a couple more pictures from Sunday (doing lots of "baby-talk" to the yearling - bless) and a lovely head shot of Scandal too.
