Anyone else with gale force winds and thundering rain? Weather has been atrocious here in Sussex since yesterday and I worry constantly about the horses in their fields 
But relented to thinking that they will do just as well outdoors (with waterproof rugs and hay) in this weather as they would be indoors as it's flapping all over the place inside our barn at the moment. And there are no large trees close by that could bring stuff down so they should be relatively safe in the field.
However, I'm a whimp and will soon be on my way to rescue them for a few hours indoors with dry hay. Trouble is that Mush's field friend doesn't have a stable (he's on grass livery) so they can't be in at night or they'll go potty being separated. And I want Mush to settle so he's better off with a friend at the moment than nothing. Arrrggh!
Those of you with horses living outdoors 24/7/365 - should I be doing anything in particular when the weather is like this???

This is mine's 1st winter out!! He has a stable but the other 3 that share the field dont come in and are very hardy.
I couldnt sleep last night because I felt awful him being out in the wind and rain, and when iwent to him this morning he was stood at the gate with a face of thunder
I got him in and gave him a small feed that he normally has and then he went straight to his haynet and started eating which he normally doesnt do so I left him for a few hours and when I went back he wanted to go back out. The sun was coming out then but now it is pouring it down again
If I keep him in at night he will be on his own which he dosent like one bit so I think he is better off out with his rug on. He was warm this morning and the only wet patched was his neck.
Luckily the fields arent waterlogged its only a bit muddy around the gateway.

Sounds to me like you're doing perfectly, this is difficult weather.
Mine are out, hay where necessary, hopefully safe in field and constantly checked. I think you're a wimp!! So am I and the majority of us worriers!! so although windy, rainy at times its very mild! |

Shah, was meant to say the only thing I would check for is muddy legs, make sure they dont get to bad incase of Mud rash.
Oh and have plenty of rugs to change into so they can dry fully before you put them back on.

| Mine are out as the barn ajoining their stables was sealed and gas put in it the girls can not go back in for a week lucky as i have just come back and my stable roof has a big hole in it and a lot of slates have sliped down the roof |

Cinny out in field in New Forest - bought her in for a meal then tuck her back up in rug and off she poottled.
However the drive along M27 and A31 to get there and back was horrific....
Supposed to be out tonight in village, but no sure; though as in Hamble could see if any of village by river flooded...
Sensibly I have just delegated dog walking to my husband! |

| Today and yesterday have been terrible here in Surrey.... I almost kept Goni in today but decided against it. Glad I didn't as she seemed fine this afternoon - slightly windswept mind! - although happy to be back in a nice warm stable munching hay!!! |

Vile here in Kent - I couldn't actually get to the farm this afternoon as the road was flooded and I had the little car. Luckily my Mum was there so fed the girls for me.
We just tend to put extra hay in the field shelters and leave them to it. They're all rugged up and have loads of man-made and natural shelter. They're fine - it's just the drive there that can be hairy - if you can even get there!!! |

All ours are out, its the first winter out for the 2 year olds but they seem happy enough! Always charge over when we call them (rain or shine), eat their feed, take the treats... then they are off!!!
I love them being in overnight but they seem very happy out, so out they will stay!
Until they're not obviously! Just have to keep an eye for the dreaded mud fever! |

| It was horrendous in Herts on Friday night and yesterday but today the sun is shining. My mare Estara did not want to be in at all! She spent yesterday in her paddock grazing quietly apparently completely oblivious to all hell breaking loose around her - funny mare! |

It's been freak weather - hailed this morning while sun was shining, made for a gorgeous rainbow!! But horses all just fine.
Once Mush has been in for dinner and some hay he wants to go back out so he seems better outside. I think I can stop worry now |

I'm in Sussex too and could not believe the weather yesterday! Our horses stayed in the whole day (we have quite a few oldies).
We were in the yard in the afternoon and I mentioned to my mum that one of the trees looked like it might get blown down...a few minutes later there was a creak and then a bang - the tree had fallen on our field shelter!!!! My mum was standing only a few metres away with our new horse and thankfully she's a laid back girl! We had literally only minutes before turned the ponies who live in the field shelter out into the field. Sooooooooo lucky!!!!
Thankfully all the horses are fine and our fieldshelter is repairable - on a plus side as well we have some new logs for cross country jumps! |
