How does everyone go on with winter turnout? My mare goes out every day in a small paddock. She is out from 8-3.30pm with 4 others and a big hay bale. With all this rain it is very muddy but she still has the interaction with others every day. I would prefer a less muddy turnout but hey ho! How is everyone else coping?

Mine live out, rugged, with a field shelter and as much hay as they'll eat  It does get muddy, I move the hay around a bit as long as YO doesn't notice too much (!) but really it's just the bit where they hang around waiting for their feeds that gets really muddy. |

Strict periods of rest and use of fields is the only way to go here. The fields by the house have to be empty from about now until the spring - they are heavy clay so they trash very easily. It's the one thing I'd change if I had a magic wand!!
The outdoor big herd move onto rested fields about now. Then again at Xmas. Then they move back to the 'now' field with the addition of the yarded/woodland. They are well rugged and adlib haylage. That field doesn't get muddy so they sunbathe up on the field, and hide in the woods when it's wet. |

Nothing I hate more than all this MUD  Hate it ,hate it! I know it always recovers but its while its here...all churned up, welly sucking stuff.My grey is permanently mud coloured.If I clean him he goes straight back out and rolls!
Mine are all still out and will winter out as I believe it is more natural for them and they are happier.They have big bales or small ad lib which is where most of the churning takes place  Love 'em all..just want no more MUD! |

| Lots of mud at the gates, especially at the babies gates, but the oldies are so not interested in coming in at feed time unless it is pelting down! Need to change younbgsters field but after the fireworks as it is nearer roads and other houses(firework parties etc)Having said that , we will have to bring back to the paddock they are in now as the winter paddocks have tooooooo much grass! But, joy, no mud!!! |
