Hi
I have just received a message via another site, basically a horse has been stolen from a Field on the 2nd November, the good news is that it was Micro Chipped and has turned up at Hollyhead Ferry Terminal, tied to a railing and had been abandoned.
So good news for the lady concerned however a few concerning things have come to light.
1. A couple of days before the theft the horse was brought in from the field and had a small plait in its mane, the owner didnt think anything about this and assumed it was a child that had been into the field talking to the horses, however the police have informed her that this is a way of marking horses, eg: a scout goes around and finds suitable horses, and then during the night a team re-visits and steals the correct horse, the police thought that this type of theft was "to order"
2. Hollyhead Ferry Terminal does not check for microchips (this horse was microchipped) the police believe the only reason it was left behind is that the ferry was going to Ireland and they tend to check for microchips on arrival, the police believe that animals are stolen and checked with a reader by the thieves before the load the ferry, the police have stated that they find horses tied to the railings at various ferry terminals on a regular basis, they are always abandoned and always microchipped.
Just thought i would pass this on to everyone, the plait thing is definately a marker (and one that the police seemed to think was common knowlege but i certainly havent heard of it before) so the more people that know about it the better. My youngster is microchipped but the next time i get the vet i will definately microchip her mum, I hadnt bothered before as it wasnt a visible deterant and i didnt think that any of our sale rooms or ferry terminals checked for chips, but it sounds like they are getting more thorough..
That said I am sure the 30 minutes it would take them to load her with her shouting her head off would be more than enough deterant for most thieves....

My mum told me exactly the same thing re the plait, that she had heard on a radio programme the other night, and how common horse theft was becoming. All very worrying. |

Both my boys are microchipped and I dont care what anyone says , they're definately a deterrent
In have signs on the yard about microchipped horses and freezemarking and cctv and everythings locked!
Hopefully we've done enough to think its too much hassle and go elsewhere which at the end of the day is all you can do really |

Re microchipping, when I had my filly foal chipped last month the vet told me that all horses were going to have to be microhipped before long and that passports will be phased out. I've decided to have mine done when the vet comes to do their next vaccinations. Better to be safe than sorry!!

My two are both chipped and I have an Identichip sign nailed to my gatepost. Although they live in a field outside the village it is on a very busy road, and I doubt (hopefully!) anyone would even attempt anything. We also have an eagle-eyeed neighbour across the road who reports to us anytime she sees someone parked in our gateway. Poor sods are on their mobiles |

How can microchipping be a deterrent? Am I being dumb? A freeze mark is obvious cos you can see it..... |

Hi SaraA - I'd be interested to know whereabouts you are - simply because I was told of this 'plaiting manes to steal the right horse' about a month ago, a friend of a friend of mine had her horses in a field near Minehead and discovered one moring two or hers had plaits in their manes, consequently all horses were hurriedly removed - is this going on nationwide or just in the South West ????? |

lol sarah years ago someone tried to steal my mare, who would not load ever. she ended up we guess going backwards over a wire fence into a neighbours field. luckily she just had a few cuts.the police got a footprint from the scene but never caught anyone.
never heard of the plait in the mane. |

I assume this is the same horse I was told about last night that came from Guildford as the owner noticed the little plait when she brought it in. If not then it must ba another one where microchipping worked. I am very seriously thinking of doing mine although one will not ne caught by anyone except me and the other will not load and they would scream their heads off if one went without the other |

I think this must be happening further north now as my daughter was taken out of school assembly today, to be told about this. The teacher knew that Michelles horse had been attacked in August & was concerned that she would get upset when she heard about this so kindly told her in private. Our horses are all freeze marked but tomorrow we plan to mark the rugs and put up signs to say all horses are freeze marked. Ours are rugged up now so can't see the marks. |
