Hi,

Lost my way a bit since losing Freddie in April and coming here opens wounds so I tend to steer clear but I was sat here wondering what to do when the light came on and I thought "my friends on lines will have some ideas"

I have sold a few bits and pieces (bought puppy and kitted her out)but want to have something that I can cherish as "Freddies". I have a Freddie box with all his dearest bits and pieces. Beautiful framed pictures and a lovely arabian statue (limited edition) in full regalia so those options are covered. I have about £250 - £300.

I intended to have an oil painting of him but have decided against it, feel I should have done that when he was alive (sorry Cate).

Sorry, I dont ask the easiest of questions but if anyone understands - it will be you guys.

thanks as always
Sandie

I bought a beautiful Magnolia tree (in pale pink) after Bazz had died and a lovely pot for it to go in.

So every year when it flowers I can be reminded of her.

Like Rafa I brought a tree in memory of my Lou, I also sponsored the Arab/Anglo/PB class at my local show and supplied a perpetual trophy (of an Anglo head study)in her name.

Agree with RAFA a tree is a great idea, it's something to cherish and watch grow, will remind of your beautiful boy - but also doing something positive for the environment.
Best wishes

I assume that you don't have any of his mane or tail hair. I saw an ad for a company that make jewellery or key ring fobs from horse hair and thought it looked quite interesting. The ad was quite small so don't know how it would look full size, if you know what I mean.

You can have horsehair made into a diamond!!! It is something I have thought about doing, to wear on a necklace to have them always close to my heart....

Hi Sandie,
Glad to see you back amongst friends...

If you happen to have any teeth of Freddies you can have them made into Jewellery too. I think I am correct in saying that SusanP on here makes them. I keep meaning to get a pendant done from one of my old girlies teeth....they may sound a bit strange but they really are beautiful.

Thanks for your thoughts - think I will definately go for a tree - we used to love spring and autumn and our hacks around the country lanes so that will be v appropriate. Need a back up tho - too much emphasis on that and I would be bound to kill it with kindness and woulnt forgive myself ha ha.

Taking some hair and having it made into jewellery was something I planned when he was alive but didnt expect him to go soo soon and it didnt seem right taking it before sending him on his way.

I have thought about a locket with a pic and some hair (from brushes)but not allowed to wear jewellery at work and would want to keep it on all the time. Another thought I have is for a music box (no ballerina or jewellery) sonething with the old fashioned wind up mechanism, plays a few tunes that I can open and play when I go down memory lane - but where to get it?? Also going to get his crabbet certificate and frame it.

Still open to different ideas though.........

I lost Jameel last year and I am planning to have a very special cd made. I have loads of photos and some amateur video we have taken ourselves. I am planning to have it all put together professionally with music. I haven't done it yet as I can't get past the bit where I am looking at the old photos but I'm getting there.

If you don't want to do the full CD with music thing then a digital photo frame might be nice with a collection of your favourite photos. There are some really nice ones now and you could put loads of photos on it and give it pride of place!

I also have a lovely display cabinet which actually my dad made for me. It has a collection of our very special rosettes for endurance and a brass name plaque. We're busy remodelling the lounge at the moment but when it's done we have a special place for the cabinet so I can see it every day.

I took Freyja's stable door plaque (which has a painting of her on it) and for now it's screwed to a door in my house. When my stables are finished I plan to put up there. I also bought a tree, it's a cherry tree and stood out as it was the shape of a horse's hind leg. Although not in a pot, when I move I'm digging it up and will plant it at the stables too. Although she was never where my girls are now, without her there would be no them and no stables, so I want her 'there' in some way. I also took her hair from brushes and put them in a little sealed clear bag (she had a beautiful flaxen mane) A few weeks ago when I was missing her badly I opened the bag for the first time. I was hoping beyond hope that it smelled of her, I so wanted to smell her... ...it didn't.... who said it gets easier...I get so upset still...Sorry not helping much, but that's what I did and have, oh and my website dedicated to her, it was my way of 'marking' her presence in some way and it really helped me even though I broke my heart over and over making her page, it did help. But I so so miss not being able to touch and smell her...

A tree is a lovely idea. I planted a rose bush where I buried Simone's ashes, it always blooms until December and whenever I see it I think of her.
Its over 2 years on but I only managed to part with her rugs a few weeks ago, they went to the Blue Cross and although I'd had them professionally cleaned some still had her fur inside. I miss her so much.

Hi

This wasnt for my horse but for my Dad, I planted an Oak Tree for him, I contacted several of the local large estates and one kindly let me plant one with a plaque in memory.

If you contact the Woodland Trust they have several schemes where you can plant or dedicate trees to loved ones, from memory they put up plaques for you, so that might be a nice idea if you had any specific woody areas you used to ride through.

Also if you contact your council they will probably have a scheme. York Council plant 200 daffodil bulbs for you.

Hope this helps

I lost my home-bred 18 month old last year, & kept a piece of his mane.
A friend bought me a locket which I have put a picture of him in it. At first I found that I couldn't wear it around my neck but had it in my pocket.
My son had a photo of Prince put onto a canvas for me.
Now my mare is in her twilight years, I kept one of her horseshoes & had it painted (hopefully I'll still have her for a good few more years yet).

Thank you for all your suggestions and kind words.

I am exactly the same with the photo's etc Bebely and while its a brilliant idea, I think like you, I will have to heal a bit more first. Fee, I can relate to you too - it's such a hard thing to live through.

Eveyone has been so kind and its a great boost to realise what I feel is normal and Im not alone.

Libby (his breeder) offered the lovely idea of a trophy and also the loan of his Mum,such kindness!!!

My friend has dedicated her bridle website to him. Bertie was partially sighted and a nightmare. She watched Freddie and I with the Natural Horsemanship and decided to try it. Bertie is now sane, stable and a v happy bunny. In the meantime I wanted a decorative rope bridle and encouraged her to start making them. She always said that without Freddie none of it would be possible, so bless him he has a website too.

I like the idea of a tree and daffodils too so lots to think about. I am going to start with a tree and give it a bit more time to see how I feel about anything else.

Thanks again
Sandie

Sandie so lovely to see you here!

I did post elsewhere when I heard the dreadful news about Freddie but I'm not sure that you ever saw it as don't think you visited often.

I was so shocked to read your news and so so sorry for you, the most awful thing you always imagined happening had happened far too soon .

I really hope that you manage to find an appropriate memento of your beloved Freddie. I saw his picture and he looked so lovely.

When I lost my chestnut anglo last year we kept some of his tail, which I have in a plait. He is buried in my cousin's field, and we plan to plant a rowan for him, since I bought him in scotland. His competitive name was Crimson King, and I found a clematis called that, so I bought that for the garden, and I presented a perpetual trophy in his name to our local Riding Club. It doesn't take away the pain of his sudden loss, but it is a way of marking his life.

One of the loveliest horse memorials i've seen is a water trough near the south downs with an inscription on it. Unfortunatly I can't remember what it says.

I hope you find something

I visited the World Horse Welfare recently and you can buy a tree which they plant in memory of a special pet or person and it was lovely walking around them and reading the plaques. The money is put to a good use for the horses as well.
