He is on bute and antibiotics, day by day he is refusing all my usual tricks.
Borrowed some sugar beet, diced apple and carrot, left his feed plain, tried adding fast fibre for a good sloppy mix, added treacle, he is such a smart pants. Taken him out of stable and put him in another stable with nothing else to nibble on he just looks at me with adoring brown eyes. I really don't want to syringe down as he is now hard to worm after i last tried this method...going to try treacle butty's in the morning?

Mine will never eat feed with meds in, but she's not hard to worm, so on the occasions she has needed medication, I get a syringe rather than powders.

Having said that, I've found I can get MOST of a single sachet of bute down in a jam sandwich (before she twigs that I'm trying to POISON her!!)

Not much good if he needs a lot of meds tho. Sorry, can't be more help.

Hi Angel, we've tried in the past Guinness - make a little well in middle of feed and mix G with bute - seems to take away the bitter taste. Also mixed Bute with Actimel and syringe it down throat - they actually get to like the taste of the Actimel and it is good for their gut!!!

Good luck - Danilon is more acceptable than straight bute but more expensive.

Try them separately too - you might find it's the antibiotic he doesn't like as they tend to be 'flavoured' - bleuch!

We dont' seem to have this trouble - are my lot just greedy then?!

Ususally just mixed into their usual feed (perhaps more feed than normal) and it'll be eaten by morning - he is a bloke after all!

My yearling will eat ANYTHING! In fact they're all pretty good, though my 3 year old refuses to touch the baytril she's on at the moment (for another 3 weeks ). I'm having to syring 33mls down (thankfully just once a day). I've actually tasted it, and i can't taste a thing. She'll happily scoff bute and anything else she's had to have in a feed mixed with a little mollasses (usually everything they have is mollasses free).
Apple puree? How about savory stuff? A marmite sandwich?

If treacle and molasses aren't working, try a strong honey such as heather. For further health benefits, best to avoid the cheap supermarket "own brand" stuff as it's been heat-treated.

Hi Angel

So frustrating isn't it. I'm so lucky now, Tamba will eat anything but getting bute or any other meds into my old boy was a nightmare. We cut carrots and apples into chunks and cut a little groove in for the drugs and then gave them individually as treats with lots of fuss and petting!

It didn't matter what we disguised his food with - he point blank refused to eat it if it contained contaminants

The Wee Ginger one has many years exp in evading being poisoned by yours truely! Clamping mouth shut, taking a bite chew chew..erghhh spit it out all over mum, take a bite & hold your breath til no ones looking..spit it out all over mum. She will absolutely NOT eat food with even a trace of 'yuckies' in it . But she did rather take to Marmite butties, spread thickly on both side so the powder sticks. Mrs Vlacq has a point though keep them separate...this may mean a LARGE jar of Marmite

I have been told that if you keep the meds in the fridge they will eat is as it is often the smell that puts them off, you can see them go for the food and then stop before they eat it. Apparently when the meds are cold they don't smell nearly as much.

Don't know if it works as mine usually eat anything but worth a try. The only one I had who wouldn't eat meds I used to buy a sack of a herbal mix feed and that did the trick. Instead of her usual feed I gave her lots of the herbal mix, sorry can't remember the brand, and she happily ate up.

Hi Angel, really sorry to hear that Baz is in the wars again. It's probably the 'bute'that he doesn't like , my old mare will have nothing to do with it at all, but 'Danilon' is perfectly acceptable. Worth a try.

Can you see if you can use Danilon instead of bute? Mine will eat Danilon quite happily but only one will touch bute.

Having exactly the same problem!

William was gelded on Tuesday and has come home with Bute and antibiotics and he won't touch a thing! I have tried grating the carrots and mixing them in....'I don't think so'. I have tried mixing honey in the feed...'I don't think so'. I even switched the Bute for Danilon....'I don't think so'. He doesn't 'do' syringes, so can't do that! Today, I am trying plain feed with nothing but the antibiotic added in, so we will see what happens but don't hold your breath...........

Mind you, although his sheath is still very swollen, oozing slightly and I am cold hosing him, he doesn't appear to be unduly concerned about his missing nether regions at all...'just give me the girls OR let me gallop around the paddock at break neck speed'!

Provided it doesnot require intravenous injections ask your vet for injectible antibiotic. Or ask for the antibiotic that comes in a syringeable form (we had it for a foal once, began with n I think)

I Had to feed my mare baytril for a month. Normally she would eat anything though as time went on she seemed to stop eating her feed. I bought some Dodson and horrall mint to add to her feed which seemed to help. When i research Baytril on the web, it advises no molasses in the feed as it effects the absorption. I bought some rough stuff from simple systems(bit like dry grass). She ate it though preferred her alfa!!! It's surprising what feeds have molasses in!!

Good luck with disguising the poisons!

Gah! Is that true about baytril? My filly has to be on it for at least another 3 weeks. Though i'm syringing it into her, she has it just before her feed which has added mollasses in it to get her to eat her herbal potion!

If you google baytril, you should find some info. I'm just nosey and like to find out what I'm giving especially when you have to sign a disclaimer with you vet(as i think it's not licensed in horses). I had to omit D&H alfalfa whilst on her antibiotics. She had a cough for months and needed 3 bronchoscopes!!! All cleared eventually.
