Anyone else stressing about the hard ground at the minute? We are supposed to be doing Devil's Dyke with Shah and Tuki next weekend and the ground is like concrete. All the flints have been thrown to the surface and even our lovely grassy tracks are baked dry and hard. Its quite hard to train and really if it doesnt rain between now and then I might decide to crew instead. Am I being oversensitive?
Just looked at the forecast and there is no rain for the South East forecast in the next few days

If it was me, I'd probably pull out?
I hacked out yesterday, & the ground was so hard.

Know how you feel Arachnid. Here in South Norfolk we have had no rain for over two months There is no difference between the roads and the off-road tracks we use, they are both as hard as each other. We have even got cracks in the soil, you can get your fist in!

I'm doing a couple of pleasure rides over the next couple of weekends but wont be going very fast, unless we do actually get some rain

Best of luck
Angela

Snap! It's rock hard in Kent too, and with Marygold's arthritis I have to now be even more careful. If we get no rain between now and next weekend, I won't be going to Devil's - simples. I won't risk her for the sake of a few extra kms.

Having a few showers today and more rain forecasted for the week ahead - have never been so happy to see a 'bad' weather forecast

Bet we'll be complaining about wet and windy weather at the actual ride now next weekend...

Didnt reply before because the 'shower' on Sat didnt even touch the ground, but its raining properly today huzzah! Will report back to you on Fri Gemma if you want an assessment before you decide whether to go or not. Not risking Spider on hard ground either. We've been walking and slow trotting everywhere this weekend.

Same here! Saturday's drizzle made no difference, but it's raining good and proper today. I've never been so pleased to see it raining!

Would you mind giving an update on Friday Julia? That'd be grand.

The ground has recovered completely - its actually a bit soft and slippery now! It'll be fine by Sunday though assuming we have our normal dry windy weather. Look forward to seeing you on Sunday Gemma. What distance are you doing? Tabita, Sarah and I are doing 34 km but riding at Novice for Tuki (and actually there are about a zillion gates, plus lots of chalky tracks, so Novice might be as fast as we can go anyway)

Very sadly I counted the gates on the route in my head the other day - just out of curiosity - and ended up on 20 (at least) for the 34k, that's a lot of gates!!!

Thanks for the update. And the number of gates sounds about right. But don't forget you do get a gate allowance.

We're entered for the 34km CR but I'm not sure yet whether we're going. I can't decide whether Marygold is sound or not. She's just putting in the occasional head nod, but that is on rough, uneven ground. I'll trot her up tonight on the tarmac and make my mind up then.

If we do go, then I'll probably downgrade to the 26km NCR. It would be nice to finish the season with a pass!
